Hey guys. I’m new to swords. I had a katana when I was maybe 8, then my parents sold it because I wouldn’t stop playing with it. Fast forward to 34 years of age, I finally bought myself one. It’s an el cheapo. But from the reviews I read, it seemed to be good for the money. I paid maybe $78 after tax and shipping on Amazon. siwode Handmade Full Tang Sharp Katana, Iron Tang,Japanese Ninja Samurai Sword,Black Matte Scabbard,BoHi(High Carbon Steel 1060) 40-Inch www.amazon.com/dp/B07DR91YSK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_bIbPEb15RFPB3It’s manufactured by Siwode, and the “color” I chose (not sure it’s a color option.. possibly just a different style of tsuba) is jiuzhijieding. Not sure what that word means. Anyway, I was inspecting the blade to see just what kind of quality I paid for, and noticed what seems to be a deep scratch or a crack next to the blood groove. I don’t see an image upload option, so I’ll upload it to photobucket after I create this post and then edit it in. Any help would be awesome. I just need to know if I should send it back in for another one, or if it’s fine to use as-is. I don’t intend to carry this thing around for self defense. I have a gun for that. But in case there’s ever a home intruder, I’d like a less noisy option.

Looks like a deep scratch to me. Shouldn't be a structural problem. Not that I'd trust a 80$ sword though.

Photobucket is fine to use but if you wish to upload more directly click the red ‘Reply’ button directly across from ‘Quick Reply’ button. Enter message and after making sure the cursor is where you want your photo to appear click ‘Add Attachment’ button in the upper right corner. In the new box click ‘Add files’ button, then go to where you have stored the photo on your computer and click the desired photo, then click the ‘Open’ button. If all is correct click the ‘Insert’ button. The forum limits your total file size to 1 MB where as there is no limit if you use a dedicated site like Photobucket. Judging from your photos you exceeded the forum’s max. There are programs that will reduce your photo sizes and on my camera I have an email setting that usually makes photos of less than 100 KB. Welcome to the forum.

I'd try Imgur or IMGbb instead of Photobucket, these days. They're more reliable, more user friendly and don't slap watermarks on your images.
PS. And yeah, it looks like just a big scratch, at least in the photos. Ugly, maybe, if you'd prefer a pristine look, but nothing structurally compromising.

I didn’t mention imgur because I can’t access their photos. Nor will they let me into their site to ask as to why.
