Should the mekugi be sticking out of the sides of the tsuka? This is on a new shirasaya I purchased.

I don't know if shirasaya follow different rules (not sure why they would) but mekugi sticking out is not uncommon. I've got a handful of katana, some do, some don't. I can only speak to one antique, and the mekugi does stick out on one side, definitely. Can't remember if the other side does.

They usually protrude at least a little bit due to how they're made. Genuine mekugi are tapered and made to fit perfectly. I'm assuming yours is not tapered at all and is a solid cylinder.
