It’s always sad in a hobby when $120 buys the cheap end stuff XD A buck twenty is nothing if your hobby is collecting cars and motorcycles. Swords and knives are relatively cheap compared to other things. 120 on my jaguar gets you a center cap for one wheel or a set of new wiper blades. My dad has two jags, a 1998 xj8 and 1987 xj6. Compared to Pokémon cards or something though I mean lol

They honestly are not super expensive. He got them both for less than what a 2019 van goes for. Now look at me saying they are not that expensive but $120 is lol. Not having a job makes things a lot different at my age

Second hand jags are affordable, but the parts are going to cost you. For real
If you buy a new one, that will be 75k to walk in the door. If you get a Santorini black F-Type SVR with the hi-po performance package.. well, that will cost you nearly twice that
Swords are way cheap by comparison

And don't even get me started on Warhammer 40K... I dropped GW gaming 10 years ago or so, got a few thousands of stuff packed in boxes still... Dropped near 200 WD in the recycling bin a few months ago, how many swords is that?

My next would be my first but one of the differences between traditional and modern production is not just the machi but in fitting habaki to the blades. Years ago, I had read threads regarding why modern production blade machi are so offset from each other (ha and mune) and that it was machigane that properly fit the habaki to a blade. Similarly how gane/filler fit tsuba without undo peening/punching.
When you add that a lot of the tsuka are outsourced and universal, pounded onto the nakago, then drilled through; trying to Model T production line katana kind of misses the finer points of how they were originally put together.
What we largely see are a facsimile that shows enough to satisfy many and then why we see others simply starting over with a decent blade and a plan.
As far as I know, Hanwei still does tsuka individually and properly fitted to the nakago and probably spend a bit more time with fitting habaki.
Cheers GC

Cheers GC Highly, HIGHLY doubt Hanwei is doing individual tsuka on a sword that isn’t even $300 www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2376&name=Hanwei+Practical+Light+Katana though I guess it’s possible.

The difference is a dedicated factory with stations in house rather than outsourcing to jobbers on a cottage industry level. Hanwei is not driving on tsuka and drilling through the entire assembly. The nakago holes are drilled, then the halves are marked and drilled, then the halves glued. The lesser Hanwei swords may have more slop in a "go/no go" inletting but with enough uniformity, they are maintaining more traditional construction than a lot of their competition.
Yes, there are functional $60 swords. Figure a dealer is paying half that as wholesale. Subtract shipping in bulk and then figure the sword might have cost the producer half that. A basket of wrapped tsuka from aunti Mei Li from around the corner then driven on a tsuka and then drilled through the entire assembly. Cracked tsuka and burrs from the drilling. Good stuff cheap.
Cheers GC

Collecting weapons such as guns, knives, and swords can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. But a buck twenty is cheap for any hobby. A round of golf costs more than that . As long as the sword is sound, use it and when you are done with it you can even toss it. I bet that 120 ends up being money well spent. Just enjoy the blade for what it is. It’s a beater not an art piece . Once you get older (I am assuming you are young), you will the finances to buy more expensive art pieces if you heart desires.
