NEVER FIGHT AGAINST AN EXPERIENCED SHIELD GUY WITH A FULL LENGH SHIELD!
It really is soul destroying, just like fighting a guy in full plate.
All the things you think work dont , I have done it a few times, regret it LOL.
PS great vid, you got some nice technique, TBH did not notice your knees much, you compensated ok.
Ditto this. I've fought SCA sword and board heavies using only a buckler. I chose poorly. In addition to being really good at blocking with the shield, they deliver thunderclap hits to areas I'm simply not used to defending like my left ribcage. I eventually figured out how to time it so I could take the hand, since they don't seem to worry enough about hand hits. It's also possible to get their heads with an oberschtit to the face.
Yep hand and head is your only target, head 1 in 100 if your lucky, but like you said the hand is presented a lot more. I was kat vs similar , best I did was 1 win in 20, ( kicking the shield was not allowed, always thought that might be a good attack since i have a TKD/Kickboxing background, even better a 180 jumping side kick to the shield might make a mess of that shield arm, but maybe not) and exerted X20 the energy. Then I went up against a really good guy with a large round shield and celtic 1 handed sword, no wins for me lol, so embarrassed me its not even funny, he just played bongos on my mid section, the second I went for anything he was up and under my guard with that damn shield and heading for the ribs.

This is why I'm a big fan of getting out of the dojo. When everyone in your group is trained to fence "correctly," you kind of forget that the real world isn't so tidy. In KDF and I.33 we invariably make very well aligned cuts and focus on a handful of targets. We don't lash out with mittlehau strikes because we're told not to expose our hands. We don't make false time attacks biffing someone with a shield and then smashing their hip with a sword. And suddenly you run into people who do exactly that--and are really good at doing it. Of course it goes both ways--the heavies have a hard time with any kind of sword interaction and have very little experience with steel simulators. I've been greatly enjoying the local matches we have here where all the different groups spar. We just need to convince the kendo guys.

That is why I was looking forward to sparring with Marcus. If your kendo guys need convincing, show them my video.
