Also, I own Paul Wagner's "Master of Defence". pretty neat read. Got quite a few works by Hand and Wagner, but this is one I still have to get. Nice to have another fellow member who is interested in Silver on this forum!

Nice to have another fellow member who is interested in Silver on this forum! To be honest I am not a devout Silverite. His treatise is just so unique and full of practical theory . Plus, I like his weapon comparisons and his colorful commentary on Italians brings joy to my ears.

Yes, this is what we should be doing more of in the forum! Exchanging ideas, debating the relative merits of swords technique and technology without being jerks to each other.
I know the katana, and have video to prove it. I can fight effectively with it also. but I can also admit to the weakness of it as well. I told Marcus that to effectively train, we must train where we are weak, not where we are strong. By doing that, our weakness becomes our strength. If we only train where we are already strong, then our flaws remain
I have come away from this meeting with a list of my weaknesses that I will focus on in the future. I am not angry or defensive about this, I am happy the flaws were exposed. When we admit to ourselves that we are not perfect, we have then achieved the beginning of wisdom.

What kind of sword was Silver talking about? A two handed sword with a blade the length of a single handed sword? So something like what we'd call a bastard sword?

There aren't a lot of swords with short blades made for two hands... The katana is pretty unique in that aspect.
There's the dha, and Han dynasty swords (mostly jian, it seems), but that's all that I can think of off the top of my head right now. I know there's more than just those examples, but swords generally seem to fall into shorter one handed weapons or longer weapons that can be used with two weapons.

Rufus was very kind to explain some of his techniques/tactics/principles. I greatly thank him for that as well as for stepping up under these conditions. One thing to take away from our sparring from how I handled things from my side is that I did seem to fare especially bad when switching to “variable fight” (tip pointing towards the opponent), although I somewhat suspected beforehand that this would give me trouble against a katana with its short blade and long handle. Also the pressure towards the infight was even higher than expected. Our meeting greatly enhanced my steadily growing appreciation for the Japanese two-handed sword – and convinced me of having made a good decision by previously having ordered three Ninjato (of which I will make a comparison thread of as soon as the last one has arrived ). I have to confess that when you switched to the variable fight position I became a lot more relaxed and confident. A JSA practitioner is right at home with that. And remember what I showed you after about the fish. I knew when you went to that position I could easily manage the fight from there. I showed you a secret, the next time you fight katana you will know what to do. This is where it pays to fight a different style. I was most uncomfortable with your overhead hold because I never seen it before and I was fighting on assumptions about what you could do offensively and defensively.

I also suspect the addition of a shield would mostly negate the majority of JSA technique. I have never fought against shield, so offhand I would approach with a mobility tactic and try to get underneath. No idea if it would work, but it seems a good place to start. It sounds like a lot of fun to try!
NEVER FIGHT AGAINST AN EXPERIENCED SHIELD GUY WITH A FULL LENGH SHIELD!
It really is soul destroying, just like fighting a guy in full plate.
All the things you think work dont , I have done it a few times, regret it LOL.
PS great vid, you got some nice technique, TBH did not notice your knees much, you compensated ok.

Trust me when I say that my knee was a huge handicap in the match. I was unable to use 75% of my technique because of it. I was a brick. Before my injury I was actually borderline good, and I could easily move like a cat.
Such is life. I can at least teach until I get a replacement knee.

I have 8" pin and 6 screws, 2 plates, my kneecap is shattered and detached, the ACL is missing, meniscus and mcl are torn, plus arthritis building in the joint. Good news is that the cartilage is still good. A gift of the US Army.
Saber vs katana. Not weird enough for me. Maybe Kat vs Zulu?

Ok will pass that on and see what he says, hopefully he will see it as a challenge, plus he lives in Colorado so you should be able to get everything he prescribes ( its nightmare in Europe, huge tarrifs and charges for getting stuff from usa ). Your one tough muther to be lunging with that.
Kat vs Zulu ....... now we are talking LOL

Yeah, but from my point of view, I can't possibly hurt that knee any worse, so no need to concern myself with comfort. I am concerned with the lack of stability and flexibility only.

Knee problems are a major pain, yeah. Not even just for mobility - most of the power in almost everything you do comes from the legs, as well, and stability is crucial for any kind of precision. A bad leg is just a huge disadvantage all over.
Be kind to your knees, kids! You'll miss them when they're gone.

And to take a moment to blow my own horn; if I did that well in a match with someone half my age, with home field advantage, and who regularly practices, then can you imagine how I was in my prime and fully capable?
Ah! Youth is wasted on the young.

Ditch the katana and pick up a cutlass, Pirates hopped around on a peg leg fighting with those. It might come to that after all. I may be better off with a peg leg and a Cutlass. If nothing else it will give me a good excuse to buy a parrot or a spider monkey. I'll at least know what to do for Halloween.

Ditto this. I've fought SCA sword and board heavies using only a buckler. I chose poorly. In addition to being really good at blocking with the shield, they deliver thunderclap hits to areas I'm simply not used to defending like my left ribcage. I eventually figured out how to time it so I could take the hand, since they don't seem to worry enough about hand hits. It's also possible to get their heads with an oberschtit to the face.
