IDK if others had the same issue but here goes. The Katana came in a display box (Which is cool and all) but I honestly have some criticism about it. I don't know if it's because I'm a beginner or I know nothing about Katanas, but I don't think the inside of the Saya should be void of wood where it really matters. About 3 inches in, the spine section's wood is completely missing. For the blade end (the edge section) it is void of any wood after 4 inches. the side has wood but it is quite inadequate. The saya rattles around badly and does not fit the blade well. It is only held in barely by the catch. I don't know if the blade has been damaged during shipping, but the tip section (about 3 inches) arrived damaged with dulled edges and cannot cut paper without ripping it. As I mentioned, I'm not an expert and I have no clue if this is what it's supposed to be like... the first time I unsheathed the katana, I noticed there were a lot of horizontal scratches on it. I just assumed they tested the blade but I found out later that it's been rubbing against the wood in the saya and practically ruining the finish. Paul explained that at the price, it's more important that the katana itself is alright rather than the Saya, but if it can't even cut paper properly, I don't know what I can use this for other than maybe display purposes... I'm very sorry to hear about this. I just took a flashlight and checked the lining in my saya. It seems to extend all the way down, and there is still no rattling. IMHO, you probably got the inevitable "lemon" in nearly any production run of anything, but they shouldn't have shipped something like that, except maybe as a "scratch and dent".

Thanks for the very great review. It is what sold me on this sword. Like wise everything is tight fitting. My mekugi pin cracked a little sadly while disassembling. So, I will have to replace it. Edge holds up nicely as well. I was wondering though, what would be best to polish the blade with? Mine has some scratches from cutting milk jugs and water bottles.

Thanks for the kind words. My advice about normal use scratches on a production sword is to ignore them, unless you want to get into sword polishing as a hobby. Routine maintenance with oil and uchiko, rubbed with soft blue disposable shop towels, to prevent rust, should preserve the polish otherwise.

Thank you for the advice. It's really just one spot that annoys me. I will have to upload a picture tomorrow. I was thinking maybe there was a polish to rub in rather that trying to use a polishing stone.

Here are some pictures of the scuff/scratches that I would like to polish if something like Mother's Mag and Aluminum would maybe lighten them up without damaging the blade. This is my first real sword, I know it's not going to stay pristine if it is used for cutting. Also curious, does the bottom of the blade spine stick up a little over the habaki on your sword? This is my first real sword, I know it's not going to stay pristine if it is used for cutting. Also curious, does the bottom of the blade spine stick up a little over the habaki on your sword? Dear heavens! That's much deeper scratches than I was expecting from bottle cutting. Did you hit something else, like pavement? You are going to have to take that out carefully with a series of abrasive papers (probably, 240, 500, 1200, 2000) going from medium to very fine in stages, roughly doubling the fineness of the grit each time. You can simulate large oilstones by taping silicon carbide paper around a 2 X 4. Before anyone reads this, and throws a fit, no, I don't do that on my nihonto, but this is a production sword we're talking about, and I'm trying to save the guy some money.
I recommend that you get a copy of The Art of Japanese Sword Polishing You can usually find it on eBay or Amazon for $40 or so. That will give you some idea of why you need firmly backed abrasives (to preserve the blade geometry, is the short form), among many other things you need to know.
The one thing that Ryujin consistently fouls up is making the munemachi and hamachi match. Because the rest of their swords are well done, I tend to overlook it, but I complained about this in my Hatamoto review (I didn't catch it on this one because I didn't pull the habaki off, as noted above). sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/62852/ryujin-carbon-hatamoto-series-katana FWIW, you can't see it when the sword is assembled, and it's not a functional problem..

No, that was a water bottle. It is on both sides of the blade. Milk jugs filled with water didn't really do much as far as scratches. So I didn't think a bottle of water would. I assume that bottle had a lot of glass filler. They don't seem to be deep. Just ugly. Don't plan on cutting a water bottle ever again.

Hello all, I am happy to post new pictures of my blade after using Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish. It isn't perfect. But, so much better and I can live with it. Attachments:

Hello Im from the UK and after reading your review and watching certain other youtube videos on the Ryujin 98 Gunto I think I will be buying one fairly soon too add to my collection of other swords , knives etc . One question I would like to ask is this , is there any way a patina could be applied to the brass ware (ideas please) ,also dont know if I missed it but are they real same panels on the Tsuka ? and if so is there any way a tea stained colour patina could safely be applied ? Thanks guys
