Thinking of buying a Tang Dynasty sword, still trying to decide Dao or Jian, hehe. Only thing is, the guards look a bit too small to be able to stop the hand from sliding forward onto the blade when thrusting.
Are the Tang style guards big enough to stop the hand from moving forward or is there a chance your hand could slide onto the blade and cut yourself ? :/

The first "Tang" style guard was actually first appear in the Sui Dynasty, a short live but very important dynasty right before Tang (the rulers were cousins).
You can find the first ever cross guide on a Dao in New York Metropolitan Museum in Manhattan. Before this Sui Dao, Chinese Dao have no hand guards.
So this was a first, and the following Tang Dao inherit this design.
For this reason, the New York Metropolitan Sui Dao is consider by many within China, a Dao of historical significance for being the few rare Sui Dynasty weapon ever survived to this day.
