Reminds me of the daisho the female samurai uses in the Ghost of Tsushima game-play trailers, except her rayskin is lacquered black and I think the shade of green for the ito was darker.

Was this the one that wasn't supposed to have a (fake) hamon?

Was this the one that wasn't supposed to have a (fake) hamon? Ya, thankfully it doesn’t look as bad as the fake notare did on my other one, the midare looks a bit better

If that’s a fake Hamon I wouldn’t mind that so much. The ones I’ve had with fake hamon were wire brushed with a definite pattern.

I thought the katana in the photo was the replacement. I have not seen a wire brushed pattern as such. It’s more pleasing than a sine wave pattern. I question the proper side the menukis are located on for a right handed person.

Looks like gyaku menuki. Hadn't noticed at first.

Menuki placement is mostly up to the owner. I have had them all over the place collecting nihonto and koshirae. I personally like them under the palms. I'm more concerned about the hidden mekugi.
Looks good though.

I'm more concerned about the hidden mekugi. Another good catch. I really don't pay much attention these days; probably because I usually browse while on break at work and can only look for so long. That said, we've only seen one side of the tsuka. I'm not super keen on ito going over either side of the mekugi, but depending how it works out it might be okay?

Yeah, probably won't be an issue, unless it has two(they should be tapered and installed opposite of each other)Just a pain if the ito is really tight. Honestly, really no reason to take them out until they need replacement.

I keep thinking I remember reading, once upon a time, that the original function of menuki was to cover the mekugi, anyway. Still seems like a pain, but again, no real need to take the sword apart if there's nothing wrong with it.

Menuki were the Peg on tachi.
From Markus Sesko: Sora menuki are imitation/ornamental menuki, whereas actual menuki were the peg and called makoto menuk(true menuki).Sora menuki, also called kasari menuki, came in to fashion from the Nambokucho period onwards.
And then we got the term Mekugi.

That might've been it. Makes sense. Anyway, back to this particular sword. It's okay, I guess.
