hey there, this is more of a general questions thread as I am looking to (eventually) assemble a suit of plate(or half plate) armour.
1. Is there a significant difference between 18 gage and 16 gage steel plates? 2. I am aiming for 13th-14th cent., can be gothic or Milanese. where exactly can I find the pieces(as I can't afford the whole thing in one chunk) 3. Is there a significant difference in terms of protection between a set of half-plates worn over chain and a set of full plate?
Thanks.

Hi guys, I think this is my first post on the forum, but I've been lurking for a while, and I think I can answer this pretty well, so here goes: 1) it all depends on what you want to use the plates for, 18 guage is OK for finger plates on gauntlets or the back of a set of cuises, but not for a helm or a breast plate. too thin 2) during the 13th and 14th c there really was no gothic or milanese armour, that was the time of transitional armour where the norm was maille covered with plate if you could afford it, the two main styles ( gothic and milanese) of plate didnt really come to the forefront until the 15th and 16th centuries. 3) yes, Maille was really only good for protecting against cuts and slashes, ( still is, thats why its still used in slaughter houses) but not so good against blunt trauma, plate spreads the force of the blow over a greater surface and doesnt allow the penetration from pointy things that maille does ( axes, hammers, and pole arms are a different story though, axes and hammers were made to defeat plate and pole arms seem to work against everything). As always there are exeptions to every rule , but that is the readers digest version of the answers to your questions. hope that helps, others should chime in tho , I'm not an expert by any means. Barry

Awesome thanks, DEFINITELY mixed up 1300s/13th cent and 1400s/14th cent. Wow, now I feel totally ignorant.

Actually...13th cent is 1200s, and 14th cent is 1300s.
