So I recently saw God of War about Qi Jiguang and the wokou pirate war. I haven’t seen a martial arts movie that impressive. Yes, Hero and Flying Daggers were good, but this felt more realistic (even if the dialogue felt cheesy and cliche in a few instances). God of War puts them to shame. The only film I’ve seen comparable would be Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, which let’s be honest EVERYBODY has seen that one, even if you weren’t into martial arts yet.
Anyway what are some good wuxia films, what are the essentials that everybody watches, what are good introductions to the genre, etc I’ve asked my sister for the Red Cliff dvd for Christmas, yes - the full 5 hour version.
So what are some “gotta see” wuxia films for someone just now discovering the genre?

Oh, and as the quintessential intro piece to the genre for a westerner, Big Trouble in Little China is one of the very most absolute of must-sees!
