Was wondering if you guys wanted to recommend me a helmet. I'm not really going for full helm...
Unless it's just that cool and affordable 😎
Mostly just wondering what would be best to protect my head if I was, say, a rogue or something in a Tolkien type world
Budget is like... 100-150$. I don't mind a fixer upper

I like my kettle helmet. It’s 14 ga. It does not restrict my visibility or hearing and is comfortable. The gauge and visor is the selling point. Thought that the visor would protect my shoulders.

Man both are exactly in the ally I was looking too. Thanks for the recommendations dudes. Exactly suited to what I want. Something that doesn't restrict vision or movement

Hi, I just visited the Bavarian Nationalmuseum to take a look at the original Munich sword, I work only a few hundred meters away. An I remembered this thread and Christain's love for helmets, so I made this picture just for you guys!

Gotta love those Spanish helmets.
A fencing helmet mask also isn't a horrible idea. I feel like finding a sturdy one would cost more than a regular helmet tho 🤔

Rogue...helmet....hmmm, IMO it needs to look COOL...flamboyant even. Maybe one of the Mongol types with a dangling scale drape...

For a rogue, I'd avoid potentially-clanky metal for a drape. Rather than scale/lamellar/mail/brigandine, go textile. Do it in 3 pieces: cheeks and a neck protector (or 5 pieces, with cheeks and 3 neck pieces). Separate cheek pieces mean that you can lift them up (maybe tie them together at the top of the helmet) and have better peripheral vision and hearing. Like this: www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/27794Another example with multiple photos: www.swordsantiqueweapons.com/s498_full.html(These helmets are Bhutanese, but textile flaps were also used on some Indian and Ottoman helmets. Also Qing, if you count the fake brigandine parade armour (rivets without plates).) If the helmet is roomy, rather than attaching the flaps to a helmet, they can be part of a padded arming cap.

That's as may be, but the head is undamaged.

Timo: that's an even better idea tbh. Being able to lift them up would make such a huge difference in that sort of scenario. Especially during summer or while hunting.
Red: that's also a good idea. Kinda like a kettle helmet. I bet it would shield from the sun really well too

Remember, a helmet only needs to protect your head .0000001% of the time. The rest of the time you wear it and nothing happens. Your biggest risk is overheating.

Yo, Bro.....You can get a Great Helm like mine (<----- ) for like, $66.** from KoA. Only 20ga. steel (I lucked out and got one in 14ga.), but hey...it's a Great Helm! Maybe not up your alley, but it's a nice helm with good vision and breathing. A quick DIY chin strap and a thick arming cap...you're good!

The kettle helmet is not hot. The arming cap I wear under it retains more heat.

I'm gonna get a kettle helm one day. Just waiting for the right one. I'm looking for the 'chapel de fer' with the ocular slits, used with a gorget. There are a few repro models out there, but none I really like that aren't $$$$$$$$.
