Specifically, I'm wondering about the historical accuracy. My gut instinct is that the blade is probably too tip heavy and doesn't have enough profile taper. Here's an antique with a similar looking blade, though it seems to have more profile taper than the Hanwei:

Mine doesn't handle well but I can't compare it to an antique. It's no joy to wield, a bit sluggish.

I see, makes sense: the blade doesn't have much distal taper.

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

Not the broadsword, but the back-sword: I handled it once at Ren-Fest. The basket is tiny. I don't have huge hands, but it was snug on me. If the broadsword is anywhere close in basket size, it might be okay IF you remove the basket liner. I think it would actually look better without.

That's actually a good thing in my eyes, haha: historically, basket hilts were quite small.

Seriously---I wear a size M to L glove, and the basket is tight. The basket on the broadsword may be larger. Dunno...never played with the broadsword. -----FWIW: If I were thinking about getting a Scotty basket, I'd go for the Cold Steel model.-----

I removed the liner (santa claus cap) and the basket is still a bit small for my ca. xl hands. With - needed - gloves it's very snugly.

Grip length: 11 cm Basket width: 11,5 cm on widest area, 10 cm at 1/4 and 3/4. Space between grip and D-guard basket part: 5 cm Space for knuckles: 4-5 cm My palm width at knuckles: 9,5 cm My index/middlefinger knuckles are pressed against the basket, gloves needed.

Awesome, thanks! That's almost the exact dimensions as the antique posted here: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/54967/antique-scottish-basket-hilt-broadsword

FYI, that antique has now gone to another home, not least because the basket was so small it shredded my hands.

Ouch! I'm curious, is that a typical thing for antique basket hilts? The painfully small basket?

The basked should be narrow afaik but it shouldn't shredder your hand.

I don't hold this issue against the antique basket. Not its fault. I'm 6'5" and 250 lbs with very large hands. Probably not representative of the original user.

Gotcha, thanks!
It's cool to know that the basket on the Hanwei is actually not as ahistorical as I first thought. If only the blade had better distal taper....
