heavy swords vs light swords

ok so light swords are definitely quicker and thinner blades definitely cut deeper assuming they are able to fairly easily cut that particular material. (a heavy axe that is a little duller is still likely to penetrate the log much deeper than a feather-weight axe that is sharper. a razor sharp axe compared to a very blunt axe will matter, but lets assume the edge is good on both, but more obtuse on the heavier impliment).
swords are also the same. Consider thrusting with a heavy tool,, with a heavy tool, letting the tool do the work will result in a much more significant energy transfer into the target.
in real battles, even in the modern era, but also all throughout history, there is attrition, and being darty could result in better performance, the real win was a balance of damage output and attrition management. So, you might hit slowly with a big weapon, but consider:
-you don't need to outperform a quicker opponent to use the weapon. Instead, like ranks of spears, there is no-one going to hit you first, if you are the spearman who is going to score a hit, it's because the target is in your striking range, and there is no opposition. because of the nature of front-line positioning, some people will simply be vulnerable, and there will be someone who is in the right position to strike them,, so they take their time, make sure they have the right foot position and will perform the right strike, and then despite the target knowing all about it, they can't stop what they're doing anyway, so then the spearman can strike them.
-modern battle is the same way. If the artillery is going to fire,,, it MIGHT happen that both sides are otherwise in equal position and readiness, but most likely if the artillery salvo is going to work, it's because they are safe, they have all day, and they can take their time and make sure they have proper position, double check their balance, then carefully use the weapon.
-a sword battle WOULD have people competing carefully with opponents, but mostly the kills will happen because someone is unable to protect themselves from so many angles, so they are hit. (more like chess). in order to hit them with a weapon, someone needs to be in front of them directly, also to one side keeping them double busy swinging extra, and then the third person can take their time, find a nice stab, line up their spear, and then strike the undefended weak-point of the soldier.
In this case, there would very quickly get to be times where thin and light doesn't have the energy to penetrate the various materials that might need penetration, and it will be possible to have a less agile, but more impactful heavy sword without the weight of the sword being the reason why you might be hit. It will be another factor.
