Donald McBane talks about a dutch knife in his bool, does anyone know exactly what a "Dutch knife" looked like in the 18th century? I couldnt find much on what he mightve been referring to. Being a Highlander (sort of) I figured he wouldve mentioned a Dirk in his book but he dosnt instead theres references to the "Holland knife". Ive seen some people say a dutch knife in this case is probably just a variation of a "(censored) dagger" but couldnt find much else. heres a quote: "The Hollanders who fight with their knives have no legal Guard. For they, by Slipping when their adversaries strikes at them, saves themselves. And the supplest man often carries the victory in their scandalous way of butchering one the other." www.jaredkirby.com/publications/mcbane2017/And heres the pic on the the knife/dagger, I think. I could be wrong here. If the artists rendition is reliable, those look like near foot long blades with lots of belly.

From the picture, it looks a bit like a bolo knife. I know the Dutch had a presence in SE Asia, so maybe bolos became popular enough in Dutch regions?
I have seen Dutch artwork from the 18th century and before that featured kris knives and swords, so the Dutch seemed to have a fancy for SE Asian blades.
I could be wrong, but they look a bit like bolos in the OP's picture

Not much different than a large steak knife or kitchen knife.

I been thinking of something to say on this thread but I don't know enough about history to be helpful. But that would be a pretty cool knife to see being created. Maybe a practicing black Smith will happily take on this project to test himself or something
