So... I have one of these, in great shape, decommissioned. Spent prodigious time polishing etc. I found a rusty one on eBay cheap, so I'm going to polish it up restore it as well as I can and make it a backyard cutter. My questions: The scabbards appear to be steel and blued, was there paling on them too? Or just paint and/or bluing? The blades and hilt, nickel plated? Or just steel? This will help me make some decisions when mr. crusty gets here_ Oh...and has anyone ever disassembled one? It looks like the pommel is a screw of some sort, but the handle is riveted.

I half read they might be, but bad scans online and semi lucid internet posts aside....I figure Edelweiss or Uhlan or others know this off the top of their head.
I wonder if theres a good way to test if they have nickel plating...maybe beach to see if it turns it black/gray?

Plated, iirc. Simichrome or Nevr-Dull will lift a lot of the fine surface rust but areas where the coat of arms or other grinding will have heavier rust.
Pipeback blades are not optimized for cutting.
Cheers GC

Thanks Edelweiss, But I gotta try....and I had very nice results with Semichrome on my nicer one. I expect this one to be pretty spotty, but nothing like the ones you restore (based on pics) And I don't know if anyone has really done cutting videos with pipebacks...so I can at least fool myself into thinking i'm doing it for science...
What about the nut on the back? It looks like its a 2 prong screwdriver or something to take it off. Just 2 parallel indents. Some special tool?

Cold Steel has some cutting with their pipeback KS52/79 ("Prussian sabre" but closer to the Saxon weapon) but it's more of a square pipe.
Looks like the foible has been quite pitted to my eye, but the photo is a little far off and could just be spotted rust. If it is pitted to a state of near porousness I would hazard against cutting with it as moisture can easily get trapped in the pits and cause deeper corrosion in that part.

If it is good cutting order I would advice marking the PoP with a red sharpie so you can cut with the proper portion of the blade, and avoid putting more stress than needed on the blade. While durable enough for fighting these were after all engineered to be used for a prolonged period of time and so aren't built like modern backyard cutting swords.

Thanks for the tips Jordan. It was cheap, so as long as no one gets injured, I won't cry if it explodes. I do plan to do a restoration post on it. It came in the mail today, has better and worse spots than expected... So a typical ebay antique. And I really only planned to do cutting with about the top half of the blade, but I will look for the PoP before doing anything outrageous. It has some interesting age and damage, makes me wonder about the old girls history...but that is for later

I’m a fan of the trooper version.
No cheap ones to be found anymore, though.
I have a trooper version that’s in pretty good shape. I don’t think it’s plated; hilt or blade.

I got one of these I presume is the trooper version last year for a couple hundred bucks. This one is fully plated. Sadly it faced the grinder pretty crudely when decommissioned, Not exactly a show piece in the collection, but I'll be damned if this isn't an incredibly nimble and fun sword to swing around. I basically walk around with it like a swagger stick on the daily, and its perfect for doing Sabre drills.

That’s the officer version. Still a nice saber.

pellius thanks all I knew was that it was M1898 from Argentina. What stands out about the troopers version?

To be honest, I’ve never had an officer.
I went with a trooper because Dave Kelly opined that it was among the best handling battlefield cavalry pipebacks available, and he recommended it over the officer version. So I basically took his advice and found a trooper to get a feel for what he was talking about.
The officer version looks like a serious fighting saber. The blade and hilt look comparable to the trooper. I would guess that they are both similar in capability and feel. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the opportunity to find out first hand. I do indeed like my trooper, though.
The officer looks like a really nice saber to me; built for fighting rather than merely for signaling or decoration. I hope I can eventually own one.

Hey Rambo, nice sword! I'm not sure about the links though... The links worked for me. However the photos opened in MS' Paint. Surprise, surprise. The first time that has happened. Beautiful sword and photos.
