god god damn it i had this nice long formatted post with links but i accidentally backed out and lost everything
im a general weapons nerd, and have taken up arnis after a long time of balking at doing things outside of home or work
hi, i like this place as one of many i lurk in, and wanted some advice on stuff i was interested in. or at least, to know which of these you'd pick as the one fun purchase among your necessity expenses
Kris Cutlery has added a lot of new weapons, including Filipino ones, from their old forges. has anyone tried the new stuff? or have long term experience with their older models? i like the designs a lot, especially the ankun barong.
the SBG store's specials has a lovely Ryujin gunto, and a miao dao that looks nicer than the ebay miao daos in that price range. I like both a lot, through the miao dao will need a lot of clear room.
they've been on clearance for a while,
so im going to kick myself if i buy something else,
save up for one of these,
and then they're sold out.
there's also the four flavors of APOC for cheaper, Cold Steel style demolition swords, and the Scorpion ko-katana as a more expensive one. the ko-katana has positive reviews, but im not sure about the feel of 2.6lbs at 31 in.
edit: oh, i forgot one obscure oldie i cant find much about. the last of the unused Windlass Maciejowski Bible faussarts for a low price; unsharpened, but i heard in passing they were good (and i love that giant kitchen knife style it has)
thank you for reading my thread, and thank you if you consider my questions

Welcome to the forum Soullessword. No need to set back and just look. No experience here with Kris’s new stuff but I have one of their pinutis from a decade or so ago that has long been out of production. I like it very much. The quality is excellent and handles like a dream.
Be very careful with what you buy on ebay. I would buy with confidence from SBG Store. I like the gunto and find it tempting. However swords are hard for me to obtain in my country and at the moment my energies, and money, are being spent on getting the last one through customs. Been at this for nearly a month, maybe next week I’ll have success, I’m hoping so.

thank you for your welcome, and your input. yeah, ebay quality can range from great to garbage; im trying to stick to stores. katanas arent my favorite style, but that level of discount with that level of features is very tempting (and ive heard a lot of good things about Ryujin.) Kris is one of the first brands ive heard of; i did heard their old stuff was very solid. if the new model quality is similar, the pricing is fantastic i hope your order clears through customs soon; bureaucracy is as fun as walking through mud

Welcome.
I am also very interested in the SBG Gunto. It looks like a really nice sword at a very reasonable price. SNG has some really nice Waki’s on super sale atm, too.

Welcome to the forum, soullesssword! The only thing I can say to your questions from my experience is, the best CS style demolition swords are the CS style demolition swords. Their swordish machetes: Cutlass, Tactical Katana, Chinese Warsword...

FWIW, I'm very fond of my Kris Cutlery monosteel langseax (after replacing the placeholder handle it came with, of course). Good design, good material, good craftsmanship; a combination that implies good things about the maker in general. I know adding more choices isn't necessarily helping, but have you looked at Traditional Filipino Weapons?

sorry for resurrecting; I read about Jkoo/sinosword, remembered they existed, and bought a second from their discount section i thank y'all still for your advice, ill consider it for a future purchase
i liked what i heard in reviews, and they had a Dotanuki with a sanmai blade for less than $200 ($174, including shipping.) Took ten days, communication was clear. It was being dicounted because the polish wasn't very clear.
there are some imperfections, like nicks on the scabbard. Main issue is the very tip was bent, like it was dropped on a hard floor.
but hey, it's a cheap sword and I need more practice with my water stones.
it also has a geometric kissaki; the tip is thin, which i guess is part of why it was damaged before it reached me
handle has small cosmetic imperfections, but is rock solid and pleasing
hamon and lamination lines are very faint, but visible
blade is very heavy but balanced; it has a thick, ax like edge. it doesnt feel sharp at all when you touch it, but it made clean cuts on thin bamboo
i think ill post a review someday after i have more experience with it. and can take better pictures of it
