I had a cutlass shaped hole in my collection and ordered the Windlass English Cutlass because I like the brass branched bars guard similar to the US cavalry sabers. When it arrived I was absolutely disappointed about the ridiculous small grip and guard, I've never seen such a childish sized hilt before and again. I've read that hangers sometimes have very small grips which force to wrap the little finger under the knuckle guard around the pommel. Anyway this hilt was simply BS. So I bent the guard bars out and up until my whole fist had enough space. The knuckle guard doesn't sit in the pommel hole any more but in case of getting a hit on it possible bending will be stopped at the pommel. I wrapped thick twine around the original brass grip, used a furniture glider to upholster the area under middle and ring finger and then wrapped it with Wilson Overgrip Band. The cutlass now works in my hand. I sharpened the false edge of the foible The brass guard has some scars from bending the bars with pliers but that looks "businesslike". Now I like my English/Bavarian Bradzn (bav. : big hands) Cutlass, arrrh-juhää!

I like the geometry of the grip and portion wise to the blade looks much better. I understand the blade of that sword is good but most people complain about the smallish grip. I use a leather slingshot pouch when gripping with pliers to eliminate scratching. I’m not sure what a furniture slider is. I think the sharpened false edge will be advantageous. All in all I think you went in the right direction. I’ll bet a dollar to donuts it not only handles better but feels better in the hand.

Furniture gliders I meant, sorry! At least my translation app calls them so. Little one side sticky felt patches to be glued under chair legs to protect the pavement. The cutlass handles and feels much better now. I always liked the blade which is a mean thruster btw.

I was unfamiliar with both terms and did a search on Amazon. There they are called furniture sliders. I also found Wilson Overgrip there and the next time I get an order together I’ll check that out. I just now added it to the list
