I've always wondered what kept it from rubbing on the shin if not custom made. Every hard shin pad I've ever owned either slid down or restricted movement

As for me, I have no issues with my shins. It’s my ankle and immediate upper foot in front of the ankle. My padding rests comfortably on my foot and due to design and goes no farther. The weight of my 16 ga. greaves brings them down to rest on the lip of the padding where they too stop. I have no problems with either flopping or otherwise moving around.

All I can say about an armor-build is---Shop, Shop, Shop. Then---Measure, Measure, Measure. Then, buy once. Buying 'off-the-shelf ' armor is a crap-shoot. It's all hand-made....there are no armor factories making perfectly identical pieces. They will all have minor differences, but so did historical armor. That's what intrigues me about modern 'LARP' armor....if you reeeeeally do your homework, you can build up an impressive kit that won't set you back a fortune....and you'll have mega-cred's at Ren-Fest...or the Halloween Party.
