Good day everyone,
I have a uniform made of wool, with a high-collar based on the Imperial Prussian Dunkelblau uniforms of old that I would like to wear beneath a set of Gothic Plate. Have any of you tried wearing a coat or pants other than an arming doublet and chausses beneath your armor, or am I out of my mind thinking the wool would be enough padding?
Thanks!

Sorry for the long response time, but my computer has been down lately. In response to your questions...it depends on your location and your intention of use of the armor. If you live in a cooler climate, wool would certainly be warmer for wear under steel plate...as long as you have soft underclothes such as cotton or linen. Wool is really itchy, so you'll need something underneath to negate that. Wool tends to 'breathe' better than synthetic padding, allowing sweat to absorb yet letting heat in or out...depending. In armor padding, wool under soft cloth is almost ideal. In my personal experience of armor padding, I wear a padded high-neck collar, padded arm bracers and padded lower leg greaves, with a lightly padded tunic under my chain mail with plate over the mail. The tunic is custom made (by me) and I don't know of a source to buy one like it...but it works. I'd say...if you live somewhere where overheating is not an issue...go for it. If it can't be seen (and scoffed at by the 'historically-correct' crowd), then wear what is comfortable. My suggestions are only related to my particular location (East Texas, USA), and my use of armor...which is for Ren-Fest and photos only. So,

Computer isues wil be the bane of us all someday, and I work with them daily... Haha
That's some great insight! Sounds like you've got a pretty solid setup put together. Texas definitely has some heat to it from my few months down there. Luckily I'm from Ohio where the climate is slightly cooler... most of the time.

Yes, summertime in Texas and wearing armor is not a good idea. Just so happens, there is a Ren-Fest going on about 30-ish miles from where I live around the end of July. I don't think I'll be seen in plate-over-mail. Maybe---maybe---mail over light clothing with a light helmet...and that'll be pushing it. Ever seen a hotdog burst wide open if you leave it on the grill too long? ........

Linen seems to breath better, and there's some argument that it functions better as an armor support.
