Dung has been asking me whether our techniques will work on targets with thick clothing or not. By coincident I have to replace a carpet, so I rolled the old one up on our upper arm / shin level target and give it a try.

WOW! I can appreciate that. My first attempt with a rug was with a run of the mill katana, Musashi™ I think, and failed. I have never been able to cut a rug (no pun intended). I have no trouble penetrating with point most of the time and have done so with four ply regularly, that is all that I have. I failed with my M1860 sabre because of its curved blade but with a straight bladed sword and good point no problem. But to cut one is another story. To say that I am indeed impressed would be an understatement.

Honestly I was a bit intimidated by the size of the target after finished wrapping it up, plus the thickness of the rug was not to be underestimated. In addition, it was not fixed there tightly, so to simulate what a thick clothing on a person would be. I did not think I would cut through completely at first and was surprised by the result too! Of course it did feel way more resisting than a usual uncovered roll, but the sword I was using wasn't the thinnest in geometry either. It was just the usual lung chuan katana cross section, just longer and straight. So I'm very impressed by the result as well. With a thinner blade I think it will go in even easier.
