Before you get the wrong idea, I'm referring to 'smokeless tobacco' snuff...not the illegal films on the 'dark web'.
*Disclaimer: I do not advocate the use of tobacco products, and snuff/chewing tobacco are no safer and less addictive than cigarettes.*
I started 'dipping' when I was in high school. All the guys did it. (And a few of the girls. ) My first pinch was of Copenhagen, and is still my favorite brand. I even tried the powdered snuff in the little cans, but that proved to be a mistake. ....
Anyone here like a 'little pinch between the cheek and gums'? Tell your funny stories. I've got a ton of 'em............

Copenhagen since I was 9-years old. Grandfather gave me some working in the garden and bought a can the next day....lol Never liked chewing tobacco. Never smoked cigarettes so it was not a gateway habit....lol

My first dip was a 3-fingered 'man-dip' sitting high on a brick divider wall outside of the lunch cafeteria. Back then, we had a 'smoking area' designated for students and school faculty that used tobacco. We also opened our Copenhagen cans with our Buck 110 lock-blade folders...that every guy had...that was a dress requirement along with the white ring on the hip pocket of your jeans.
I got dizzy and fell off the wall. Next day...right back up there.
The Skoal dippers were looked upon as Klingons in Federation space.

When did snuff go from being inhaled into the nasal cavity to being held in the mouth like chewing tobacco?

If you've ever tried snorting powdered snuff...the fad probably didn't last long. ......

I wouldn't call snorting the stuff a fad.

I think it depends on where you are from in the country. We called the long leaf chewing tobacco "Chew" and anything in a tin "Snuff" or "Dip". I found out years later that "Snuff" is bought in a tiny tin and can be inhaled or pinched in your lip. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago "dipping" Copenhagen first and then moving over to Kodiak. It was harder for me to quite "dipping" than it was to quite smoking. Finally kicked both habits about five years ago after 30 plus years. I'll be damn if I'm giving up my whiskey though.

My Grandfather also used the powdered snuff sometimes. He would basically lick the blade on his pocketknife and put it in the tin. After it had the snuff on it, he swiped the knife blade on his lip to put it.

The old men who congregated at my Grandpa's old general store used the little wooden spoons that came with ice cream cups. He sold lots of ice cream....and snuff. I never saw any of the old men put the snuff in their nose, and never even heard of the concept until I was in my early 20's. Don't try that with Copenhagen. ......

Many years ago I worked in a warehouse . Two of the guys I worked with started using that stuff . They would walk around carrying a plastic cup spitting in it all day. Somehow that did not appeal to me , was more of a pipe and cigar type.

It's not my cup of tea but snuff has an old tradition in Bavaria. Here's a picture from our world cup 2018: And there are snuff machines:

Made the mistake of having a 40oz beer before chew, thus making the beer come back up real fast.

Made the mistake of having a 40oz beer before chew, thus making the beer come back up real fast. While the other way around...? It sure accentuated the buzz (blood vessel constriction), but after awhile you are on a merry go round there the contents of your belly want to get off, so the unacquainted best start with a 12oz (Gulp...Captain Obvious) before mixing chew.
