Hello guys,
It has been almost 3 months since I started JSA. I've been using my uniform in aikido for training, then later on bought a gi. Now I'm looking for a kaku obi. I've seen obis made of cotton, polyester, or silk. What material would you best suggest to use? Can you please cite some pros and cons?
Thanks! Aldwin

All are ok. If you are rather slim hipped a stretchy one is really good to compensate for the hips, good for most girls too. If you have a sword belly cotton is fine, silk is luxurious and Poly is utilitarian.

the nicer ones our dojo has are cotton which works well for me anyway. they do sell these less expensive ones that basically look like a regular karate black belt but with thinner ends for tying the correct not for iaido, but they really do suck. I recommend at least the really nice cotton kaku obi that are 3.5" by about 150", but then you could also get lucky and find a nice old silk one on ebay for around the same price or less. Ours start at about $50.

I actually made my own, it's 300cm and it's a decent size for me. It's 10cm wide and it's just two pieces of a thick denim/drill folded together. Not traditional, but I can get it tight and it does the job.
Thanks, -Khalastas

I have a cotton one . www.e-bogu.com/Kaku_Obi_for_Iai_Brown_p/tak-iai-obi-kakuobi-brown-.htm I love it, it is very practical and holds my saya/bokken quite comfortably. It is now nicely worn in and smells like me ;D I am a bit of a cotton person from convention but I do intend to get a silk obi one day, maybe next trip to Japan. Silk is a really tough material and if woven tightly quite supportive.

Thanks for the reply guys. I think I'll go for cotton since the price is reasonable. Silk is just to expensive. I've been searching in the internet for a kaku obi, and finally found one that is reasonably priced and it's from Japan. www.kimonoexport.com/Results.cfm?PageNum_Results=2&category=13&secondary=0I think I browsed through all the sites selling kaku obis, and that is the one I found that offers a very good price. There are silk kaku obi being sold at Yahoo Japan, but man... they are very expensive. I also browsed eBay, and most of the kaku obi that ends at a good price are mostly used (vintage). The price of the new ones on eBay ends at (shipping included), is almost the same as the one in that site, but little choice on the color. So I might as well buy a new one from that site, choose the color that I want and have it wear it out or age it by myself. Now, what color should I get? I also have my eye on the brown. ;D Thanks again for your inputs. Aldwin

I used a Navy Blue, mainly because we have a black Hakama and blue Keikogi, it is only logical.
Thanks, -Tajima
