Medieval Collectibles has a fairly new Barbute made by 'House of Warfare'... It looks okay, but I'm not too sure about how good it would be. Several other new helmets there from the same maker. They are the ones with the item number starting with 'HW-****' . The liners are made of cloth, but as long as the chin-straps are riveted in---the actual liner can go. Tha t's what arming caps are for. If I could only find one with ear-holes. Great protection but I can't hear squat. www.medievalcollectibles.com

The Bascinet looks like a good protective design but with my claustrophobia would never work for me. I already can hear my ears ringing from a strike as well as my breathing. Not to mention feeling my chest pumping to get more air and haven’t gotten to the vision impairment yet.
I believe that I could live with a barbute. But will still some issues such as hearing and vision.
If I had to get another and a kettle helmet wasn’t available I believe I’d get a morion because of its brim.
For me my kettle helmet is all I can ask for. The brim gives me protection where I feel I need it the most, my shoulders and is the reason for my choice. In fact I had a chance to test that out recently when my smart arse handy-man started playing games. He was tasked with trimming my mango tree getting the limbs clear of the power lines. I was steadying the ladder. It only took a few seconds of the debris coming down that I realized I was potentially in trouble and went inside for my liner and kettle hat. He got a laugh and had to examine it. Being a nica I have no doubts that he had never seen the likes before. Frequently a tico worker inside will see it and need to inspect. Back to the ladder w/hat on I never looked up as no face/eye protection so I judge by sounds but branches, leaves, and of course mangos were falling all around me, some brushing me but never a direct hit other than on the helmet. And I swear I think the man picked some mangos and dropped them on me to test the hat, would hear him laugh from time to time. Nothing directly struck my shoulders, my head or rather the kettle helmet was struck numerous times. I have to say that I could hear more than feel those strikes. The brim also helps with light and I suspect the rain although I’ve never given it the rain test. I can hear and see without restrictions. The only issue I’ve found is that if I wear the hat while laying down the brim gets in the way. Of course if I remove the hat and cover my face it protects from light or whatever.

I saw rico (which is a Spanish word) and said what the...? So tico which you know is a costarricense aka Costa Rican. Nica is slang for a nicaragüense aka Nicaraguan. Looks like my spelling check is not perfect also. It's been corrected. Thanks

S.B.----You mentioned the liner adjustment knot being an issue. A few of my helmets have this type of liner in them. I replaced the leather cord with either para-cord or strong silk ribbon. If you turn the liner outside of the helmet and lace it through the holes correctly, the knot will be on the topside of the liner when you tuck it back in. You can also add strips of foam rubber between the liner and the inside of the helmet for an optimum fit. I wear glasses most of the time, so I put extra foam at forehead level to push the helmet further away from my face. Problem solved. This is GREAT advice, thank you! I wear glasses too. Honestly this will never see contact action, either from weapons or mangoes. Visibility is only important so I can wear it while I watch tv. I’d like to be able to make it fit without the need for an arming cap, so the foam rubber idea sounds promising. I’m still on the hunt for the helm in my original post. The best price so far is $115 delivered from here, anyone have experience with them? A secret discount code maybe? www.darkknightarmoury.com/visored-bascinet-combat-helmetThe barbute... When I see it, I can only think of this:

Dark Knight Armoury is nothing but an offshoot of Medieval Collectibles. Same brands, same products, different storefront look. All their 'in-stock' stuff comes from the same warehouse. They (MC's and DKA) will probably be running a Labor Day sale soon, so........

If I were to buy one, the helmet you linked above would *probably* be the one I would get. It looks a little rough around the edges compared to some higher-priced versions, but nothing a little weekend spiff-up job wouldn't fix.

You own that ? I little above my budget, but I really like it. That padding is impressive.

So...what are you gonna do if the padding starts to get dirty and smelly? It's glued in, with the chin strap riveted through it. That's the main reason I never popped on getting one...otherwise, it's a kick-ass helmet.

That would be a good idea. None of my helmets have cloth liners, but I still wear a thin 'doo-rag' over my hair.

Is the listed inner circumference on helms pretty accurate? The Levin Lance , did you get the medium or the large of that pot? I would imagine KoA and Medievalcollectibles have a pretty good return policy if an item doesn't fit. I'd even be okay with paying shipping back, just so I'd be able to try it on. We really need Kohl's or Men's Wearhouse to have an Armour Department for trying this stuff on

I've been eyeing this one too. Heavier gauge, good brand, a bit better-looking than the other long nose houndskulls (IMO). Thinner quilted lining, but looks accessible enough to add christain's foam padding trick. Would look extra cool with an aventail attached. A medieval mullet? KoA HoundskullAttachments:

That's yet another helmet I've considered in the past. I once owned the 14th Century Great Bascinet-14ga. It was an awesome helmet, but at almost 11 pounds...... I kinda regret ever selling it, but my neck and back are thankful. I think I sold it to someone here on SBG. (?) Might have been over on myArmoury though. My memory is shot.......

That looks sweet. With that small face hole though, I'd need mine fit with prescription lenses haha

Sorry this has taken me so long to do a write-up. I finally got a bascinet very similar to the one in my original post. House of Warfare brand, 16 gauge, from Medieval Collectibles, thanks to christain ‘s advice TLDR: It’s my first helm and I really like it. Visored Bascinet Combat HelmetShipping was free with MC’s Labor Day special. They also matched Dark Knight Armory’s price of the same SKU, so the delivered price was $96. Medieval Collectibles was a delight to deal with. Helmet arrived well-packed in bubble wrap. Despite the heavy coating of oil, there was a thumb-sized spot of rust on the visor but it rubbed out eventually with a gray scotch-brite pad. The padding inside is very comfortable. I wear a size 7 1/4 hat (about 22 5/8” circumference), and it fit me right out of the box with no adjustment. I believe the liner tie cords could be loosened to accommodate mail and/or a cap, though. The lining does not appear to be easily removable. The chin strap is simple, but effective—the wide leather straps are riveted to the helmet and tied under the chin with a leather thong. Interior metal surfaces are painted black. The weight: With the visor attached, it’s 6 lbs, 10 oz. I think this is the high end for what I’d want to wear for an extended amount of time. Without the visor (and pins and chains), it’s only 5 lb 2 oz
Visibility was better than I expected. I wear glasses and the visor doesn’t interfere with them. The edges of the “barbute” opening are slightly rough so I would be concerned about scratching the frames of my glasses over time. Can someone help my place this style of helm in history so I can be “somewhat” accurate as I build the rest of my kit? I’m guessing around 1350?
