Pool noodles, rolled up newspaper rolls(soaked), beachmats rolled and soaked, etc. All cheaper then tatami mats but still good. What do u hang the pool noodles on?

I prefer spiking the pool noodles actually. Will make it more difficult as the noodles are floppy and will bend unless your cuts are fast and well aligned
Large hanging sheets of paper are a tough test of skill that i haven't gotten down yet.
I also advocate for swordsmanship practitioners to try cutting meat at least once. Not as a test of skill but simply to see first hand what their sword is capable of. It helps give some perspective on what exactly they are accomplishing when light smacks and taps are given during sparring.

I usually dont spar tho tbh. I have seen meat cut though and know the damage that can be done.

Cheepers, just look at cutting videos on YouTube, that I'm sure you have, they are full of ideas of targets themselves and the way people mount them.

Start by cutting water bottles, and u need a good(soft) cutting stand which makes you feel confident if you fail the cut the blade wont take a set.
Soaked news paper is fun target. And the cheap less dense single roll tatami isnt that hard the cut.

Actually i find cutting meat to be most eye opening for tiny, light cuts as it shows how horrific a cut you can get from a casual tap from a shaving sharp sword

I cut soaked newspapers cored with chopsticks (various number for different simulation) or PPR / PVC pipe (different diameter and wall thickness for different simulation). These are challenging targets.

The best (most realistic) targets I`ve used for cutting are hanging logs of fir wood. Logs of about 6 feet, hanging from a foot long rope. Cover the logs with fitness mats (resembling flesh rather well), covered with multiple layers of clothing (I like denim), all fastened with duct tape. This set up gives good feedback for the cut and is also test of the durability of the weapon. You can also add PVC pipes of different thickness between the layers of fitness mat, resembling bone.
Or get a freshly slaughtered sheep head and see how much force it takes to actually cut a realistic hard target (then again, sheep skulls of course are harder than human ones - but most likely not in all areas, though).

Will a freshly shot starling work? JK lol but thx for the suggestions
