Got my Hanwei practical XL light a few weeks ago, and finally got enough footage to consider making a video. I didn't get a lot of statics, but in general this is the easiest time cutting bottles that I've ever had. I got the sword because I wanted a no-nonsense dedicated cutter, and I absolutely got that. The second session starts around 4 minutes in and my performance improves dramatically, despite me being in a purgatory of swarming insects and trying to rush.

Always been curious about the practical xl. Is the geometry closer to a hira zukuri?

Nice cutting, you have your own style.

Always been curious about the practical xl. Is the geometry closer to a hira zukuri? It is my favorite light cutter by far. You could say its closer to hira zukuri than most katana due to how wide the cutting surface is. I am looking to get an actual hira zukuri as well one of these days

Try not to dip your shoulder so much as you execute / follow thru on the cut. Where do you live? You might enjoy training and competing Toyama Ryu at a dojo.

It looks like a good sword for doubles and statics

Hey Juardian,
Have you noticed any drag or disruption in your cuts due to the bohi? Or is it comparable to cutting with a sword without bohi?

Good cutting Juardian! I would say that your obi is a bit loose though. Try different ways of tying it, and on different positions on your body. It should move forward and back, and a little up and down, but shouldn't turn completely around. It's a matter of safety for yourself, but also the sword/saya! Also, I agree that your swing should be like golf, don't move your shoulders. This makes sure you get a repeatable cut every time because of muscle memory. Remember, hands stiff, arms loose, and the cut comes from your body, not your shoulders. Finally, work on learning to maintain mental presence in spite of the mosquitos. The warrior's most important weapon is his mind, and practicing with the clarity of mind necessary to make sure you do the right thing in a difficult and complex situation starts when you train. There will always be small distractions that try to lure you away from what is most important. After you learn mentaly to acknowedge, accept and dismiss mosquito bites from your attention, your cuts will improve.
