This is a letter opener I forged from an old round file. It has a handle made from stacked wooden beads, which are very comfy. It is a slim and fine blade. First, I fully annealed the file, and turned the handle section down in a lathe to the correct thickness for fitting the beads. Tough work. Then I forged and ground the blade section on. Once ground, it was hardened by quenching in oil, and tempered to a straw yellow at 210 degrees C in the oven, for one and a half hours. The handle beads are a neat fit. Polish is a satin finish, at 500 grit. Here is the whole knife; And a close up of the blade; And a close up of the handle; This was my first attempt at a high carbon steel forged blade, and it didnt go badly at all. No problems in the heat treat, and none elsewhere either. It is nothing special, but at the very least it is a damn fine letter opener.

Again, the photos were taken at a time when my "photographer" was having a very bad-mood day.
