Today is a holiday in Costa Rica, one of the biggest of the year. It is in recognition of Jaun Santamaría’s birthday, a hero in Costa Rica’s one and only war against a foreign power outside of border disputes. Santamaría was mortally wounded when attacking and destroying an American stronghold single handily after several men had been killed in trying to do so, resulting ultimately in the defeat of the Americans. So much for the today’s history lesson. Yesterday I was horsing around with Hazel and said “you realize of course if it wasn’t for Juan we could be speaking in English at this very moment”. I am afraid that went over like a lead balloon. Bite your tongue, boy.

Interesting history. It’s a miracle that the Filibuster invasions were mentioned at all in public school, and an even greater miracle that they were presented in a negative light, even if the extent of their crimes was left blank.

Every school child here knows of William Walker. Filibustering was common during the mid 19th century but seems to be a secret and not mentioned at all in the US school system. Filibusters 3.pdf (860.79 KB)
