imgur.com/a/vTF6Sn6Hey all, just thought I'd drop a line here to showcase a book I purchased in my youth. Called "The Sword and the Mind", it contains much that could be of interest to many readers here. Mainly due to it's age. I've put an imgur album above showcasing the TOC and the first illustration of technique. I was originally going to post this as a response somewhere else but didn't feel like thread necromancy.

It is a great source, not just for JSA.

Yagyu Munenori's text is one of my favorites. A great/required read on zen swordsmanship. The inclusion of the 'catalogue' of techniques is also pretty nice.
So far the nicest translation I've seen is William Scott Wilson's. He does great translating work in general.

I've been meaning to get a copy myself, years ago I heard that my own version has a translation that's rather lacking. I do have Wilson's biography on Musashi, though, and it's one of two really good ones I've read.

Check it out, if you haven't already. It's wonderful!

Thats the other bio I have! Been ages since I read it, but iirc he is a modern practitioner and lends insights onto Niten Ryu from a martial/technical and historical background.
Definitely felt grateful to find it in English, and highly recommend to those who haven't read it!

I may have to look into this book as well, along with Book of the Five Rings. Any other recommendations? I've had a sudden spike of interest in reading this kind of stuff.

I may have to look into this book as well, along with Book of the Five Rings. Any other recommendations? I've had a sudden spike of interest in reading this kind of stuff. This (Kenji Tokitsu's) book has the Five Rings translated within, alongside his bio. It's very good, and it's sources are all listed, and conflicting accounts are compared and contrasted (these references are generally works you'd need to learn Japanese to read, and then get permission to handle said documents). Probably the best book on Musashi available in English from what I can tell, unless something newer has come into print in the west in more recent years Alongside his own translation and explanation of the Five Rings, he also looks at Niten Ichi Ryu today, and suggests why certain superfluous movements made sense back then, when shugyosha fought often in the outdoors and there was rocks and such to worry about underfoot. As for more reading, in a different vein though- the Tale of the Heike has some pretty epic battle scenes, even if much of the cultural significance of other scenes were lost on me xD (Disclaimer: I apologize for anything here that is actually incorrect, Im an enthusiast and not a trained anything at all )
