Does anyone have any resource or knowledge about "blackened wire" for grip wrapping? I've got a sword with black leather on the grip and along the scabbard as well - and would like to match the black with either all black wire or maybe a twisted black and copper. This is a "user" so the black should be as resistant to wear as possible...i.e. the black should not wear off with use.
Yes, I've looked through the long thread dealing with re-wrapping and found nothing specific that relates. Thanks.

www.yusheng-wiremesh.com/wire-mesh/black-iron-wire.htmThis is just an example. I didn't explore their ordering process. It's available in the right gauges for a grip wrap at least. I think I remember seeing some blackened wire at ace hardware recently. Edit: ok so those guys are in china. it was the first thing to pop up under "black wire hardware" on google. If your local hardware stores don't carry it, try google or ace hardware's interweb manifestation.

You can get black annodized 24/26/28 guage wire from beading shops. However it is a finish that will come off quite easily.
However you can also get steel wire, which will react with perma blue. Then you can cold blue it to a blackish colour.

OK - thanks guys. I'll look further via Google and others.
One of the problems with the steel/blued wire option is that if I want to potentially twist black and copper together into a twisted wire the steel and copper would have pretty different levels of maliability...stiffness...whatever. It might be a problem. I was hoping for some kind of anodized aluminum that would work. Maybe that wouldn't be a good idea.
Will search further.

Don't worry about mixing steel and copper. They will twist perfectly, I've done it several times. Just use the same guage for both (26g and 28g are the go). The annodized wire you get from beading shops is copper, and it scratches too easily for your brief.
Consider blued steel + copper. I don't know if perma blue will tarnish the copper however, so whether to blue it once finished, or before twisting.

I've done blueing before...on a rifle barrel. It was a hot process. It was easy (if you don't mind having octagonal black powder barrels stuck in your oven to heat up). 1. Do you think that a cold process like the perma-blue will be more resistant to wear than a hot process? 2. I'm thinking that blueing the steel wire PRIOR to twisting is certainlhy the way to go...thanks for the tips on the gauge and twisting characteristics!!! Um...how about SOURCES for the wire? Ones that aren't in China.
