So... No recommendations? I honestly think a machete will not get through a fencing mask. Nor a longsword even if sharp. My sabre trainer has a similar weight and balance to actual antiques, and I've taken it to the face when I didn't own it and there's no dent in my mask yet. A hema mask at basic level will run like 60USD, so you could always get one to test one. I'd always recommend rigid throat protection. I got mine at Dark Victory Armory on Etsy. Under my mask it wears well and it pretty protective. It's plastic but I don't think a machete or last man on earth sort of situation would see it's way past it. Could also go for steel and leather.

It's a requirement to have a rigid gorget in some fencing tournaments anyways, so for armor it's a pretty important step. I've gotten throat punched by a rapier before and it's really not fun even through the mask bib and my Spes AP.

Keep in mind that a fencing mask doesn't protect the back of the head, you will need an extra bit for that (standard HEMA gear). Also, I am confident I can get through a mask with a good thrust from a longsword. I have dented masks with feders before, a sharp with a point design like a XVIIIb or a XVa will go through I think (not that it wouldn't be preferable to not having one if hit in the face!)
Most importantly, a fencing mask is not designed for defeating heavy blows from things like clubs, maces, axes, etc. Those things will either go through directly or cause major blunt trauma regardless.
By far the best fencing maks for HEMA is (in my eyes) what my club has been developing with Uhlmann fencing. Steel sheet reinforcing at the front and the sides, lengthened mesh towards the back of the head and a much improved interior padding. No pics yet, the mask will be reveiled in a few weeks and be ready for purchase.
What do you intend to use the mask for?

Not a bad choice for general SHTF, only thing it doesn't protect against are thrusts from blades or spears.
I think an actual military helmet with some added protection for the face would be best. Obviously, for HEMA a fencing mask is the way to go.

Just as a bit of side info, ive tried stabbing through a 1600N rated sport fencing mask with a sharp rondel dagger and only managed to get the first centimetre in.
I also tried on the bib and was only successful with tremendous pressure and 'drilling' action.
All in all i think a fencing mask would be pretty good but not infallible against a stabbing attack to the face.

I think I shall get a fencing mask. Based on whats said, its exactly what I am looking for. Thanks for suggesting it guys, and also for letting me know a bit more about them. I really appreciate that
Realistically, I will likely only use it for sparring. With this new job, I will have more time and more money, if I do it well. But beyond that, is only a concept. I wanna have different sets of armour for different uses. Just for the heck of it. Like... Is there a non cringy way to say some real life bat suits? Or do you guys also find it cool?
Pgandy, Love the idea. I would love a set of full maille and gambeson and what not sometime too. With some plate attached. Honestly, a full knights set would be one of my peak goals, along with some special forces level armour.
Zen, that is a dope idea to keep myself satisfied for now. I like to buy myself up. My first SHTF armour was impact armour. I figured not busting my bones as easily was a good enough advantage to have it. One day I shall work up to the perfect bat suit
With the fencing mask, I wanted to pair with ring mesh with steel wire mesh arm bands under to act as cushioning and extra security, a stab vest, with additional flexible stab panels. Just to kinda make a completely cut proof, reasonably light armour that can protect against modern blade threats. Would be good anti zombie armour too me thinks.
Full riveted maille with gambeson, some plate armour and helmet would be much better though
