I’m trying to get an idea of the best way to do this without having customs problems, can anyone give me some advise?

I don’t know what you ordered or want but I found that if I order an unsharpened blade and declare it as an unsharpened replica helped and customs left me alone until this last time.

Have they checked the New Zealand customs website? That would be the first place to check for information about any import restrictions or fees.

Some shippers have their own kinky regulations and brainfart of the day as to whether something is a weapon. Hopefully you have several options for shippers. But the main thing is NZ law, so check with them, in writing, and keep multiple copies of everything.
Sorry if I sound like I have been in Central America too long. With the current political situation I have completely given up on bring a sword to Nicaragua.I play with my machetes and axes and will eventually approach a local blacksmith to do a short sword.
