I’m curious to know how deep the etching on the forte is. I like the looks of the rapier, but the crisp etching really doesn’t do it for me. Could it be sanded out without removing a significant amount of meat from the blade? I’m guessing that sharpening the lower two thirds would fix any change in balance, but I wouldn’t want to weaken anything. Any experience with removing Windlass etching?

It's not etched into the steel at all. It appears to be some sort of enamel or paint that sits on the surface. I'm guessing that some flitz or similar metal polish and some buffing would get rid of it pretty well.
