Is this is an old for lack of a better work machette that’s been sitting around for decades. My dad got it when he was younger back in the 70’s but doesn’t remember where. I was wondering if anyone more experienced could give another opinion on this. From what I can tell it’s a peened construction, with the possibility of being full tang. I’ve been thinking of making it a project, attempting to make a practical fantasy orc sword. I don’t know the metal used but it seems like it could be steel. If anyone has advice on how to further identify it, I’d like to try and breath a little life into it even if it just ends up a wall piece.

Check with a magnet and see if the peen is steel, it may be a fake plug. I'd be tempted to grind the peen off , remove the handle and look at the tang. Remember the handle might be glued on also, so you may need to use some heat to loosen epoxy. As to testing the blade temper...theres lots you can try, it just depends on what you have on hand.

As for the temper I’ll have to look into that. But I do know I want to thin the blade out a bit, it’s unwieldy top heavy at the moment. I figured I’ll check the tang once knowing if it’s tempered and could be used for something

Whew! If it were mine, I'd grind off the peen, and do a full disassemble. Then you know what you're working with. Worst case, you grind off a little blade to lengthen the tang if you want a longer grip.

Judging from the diameter of the grip and the width of the blade, I'd think the tang is going to be too thin to support the weight of the blade if actually used. Now you could grind down part of the blade to form a thicker tang but the then ground blade wouldn't make any kind of a orc weapon.
You could after grinding it down mount it on a longer haft and make a serviceable glaive out of it.
