Yes. Since I behaved myself and was such a very very good boy (TM) this year, a little end of year present was in order to celebrate this quite astonishing feat. So for some time I was looking for a nice Cavalry Officers sabre. One with all the accoutrements like gild, much intricate detailing and so on.
I soon found out that sabres with a First Empire provenance, even when this provenance was rather feeble, had a price tag with large numbers on it. So, I started looking for a good sabre from just after the Empire. Say Restoration period. Those, I learned, go for much more reasonable prices while preserving all the goodies I was looking for. Even more so because of many an Officers dented ego.
After about 2 months I stumbled upon this one.
No blue and gilded blade which is often quite faded and rusty anyway, but 80% of the gild on the hilt and scabbard is still present and this score may go up after I clean the sabre a bit.
I just now unwrapped it. There's lots of hand chased detailing too and then there is the blade.
When I saw this blade I knew it to be the one. I think it is a Lancer or Hussar blade, with this clipped point ( Please correct me if I am wrong) and more Cavalry Officers sabres have it, but none of the others I saw have this double fuller design. The spine of the blade is facetted and it has a nicely worked foible.
All the metal work is of a high level and very precise.
There are no stamps or other traces of manufacture, but that is not uncommon for Officers goodies. The state overall is near perfect and I am very happy to have this one. For all I know it could be Empire. Who knows?
It handles very well and the blade length is 85 cm, which is quite long for an Officers blade.
I will do the usual write up on a later date, after I cleaned it and hopefully have found more information. The pictures were made by the seller.
