For anyone looking to blacken the blade using bluing solution on the large Cold Steel Viking/Dane axe I found they have a heavy plastic coating on them. At first it wouldn't take the treatment but I noticed the sharpened edge did. I didn't have any problem doing my smaller CS Viking axes but no go on the large one. So I figured there had to be a coating on it that the carburetor cleaner I used to clean the grease off it wouldn't cut. So I put it to the brass wire wheel on my bench grinder and you could see the plastic coating turning white as it was being removed. Now it's turning black the way it should.

Maybe it was some type of laquer? Not sure what your carb cleaner would dissolve...good to know though.

The only problem I have with using stuff like that is how do you safely dispose of it ? I would rather have a little extra work then dealing with that. Nice job on the axe though.

Let the "sludge" dry out, which does not take long, and you can then safely toss it out with your normal household trash, depending on your local laws.
I called my trash service and that is what they told me to do. They added that if I cannot let it dry out, mix it with kitty litter or oil soak and then dispose of it normally. They also said I could take it to the local collection site if I wanted to, but they would simply put it in with the regular garbage if it was dry. If not, they would dry it with kitty litter and then toss it themselves.

The bluing worked fine after getting that plastic coating off.

Did you see how I used Chinese mustard to patina my CS Viking axe? It's a sticky now. I've often wondered about using cold blueing on steel weapons - I have a gun collection and have touched up guns with cold blueing. It's not very good for use on guns, but I now see it's great on steel axes.
I love the runes on the handle, and the way you covered the stupid pin holes. That a gorgeous axe.
