Hi all, I have a girlfriend who really wants a Bagua Dao. I'd like to get her something relatively nice as a birthday present, though hopefully not fully bank breaking. I've looked around, but everything I've found was either stainless steel or terribly reviewed (ryan swords had a 1095 Dao but their reviews are horrible). I was hoping to stick to under $300 if possible.
If it matters, she's likely going to be using it for dance purposes, but she's a solid martial artist, so I don't want something that would shatter if it were used as a sword.

www.wle.com/products/WGL135.html55.25” long 4.6 pounds Some distal taper Self-supporting blade Made of “combat steel.” Not sure what that is. Maybe WLE will tell you. It’s a little difficult to imagine using one as an actual weapon.

It’s a little difficult to imagine using one as an actual weapon. Eh. Same overall length as a Hanwei claymore, and more than a half pound lighter. It still would depend on what its POB and overall weight distribution is (hope the lighter weight isn't from a thinny-thin-thin tang!). But as a battlefield weapon, sure, could be perfectly viable.

Timo: www.ryansword.com/Qian-Kun-Bagua-Dao--sgl9018-p-972.html That's the one I was looking at. She was very clear about "Bagua Dao". Said a wushu version of the same was not what she wanted. She knows her Chinese weapons relatively well, so in theory she ought to know what she was asking for. She also referred to it as a "Bagua Saber" which, from what I can see online, is the same thing. I pinged WLE asking what sort of metal theirs was, but got no response.

I bought a really nice jian from WLE a few years back. They're not good communicators, but the sword was excellent. My son uses it for cutting all the time...I passed it on to him. It was a little heavy for my tastes and I preferred my Hanwei cutting jian (I just love that sword!).
Anyway, I would be shocked if it's anything other than a high carbon steel...but it could be as low as 1045.

I have one of those 1 1/2 hander and also the smaller version, both nice for sure, really good cutters, after I sharpened them, holding the edge nicely.
But the size of the big one does not really messure up to one of those huge Bagua Sabres. If you want such a beast, in high quality, you probably need to go custom made.

Yes, the CS Bagua dao is pretty tiny for a Bagua dao. Mini-Bagua dao.

I have one as well and I agree. I also have a nagus I got on a trade a couple years ago but it's not nearly sturdy enough for your needs.
