Well i decided to try a tsuka from scratch. This is only a prototype. I made the core from pine just to get some experience in the process. It will never be installed and was only made for the experience. Here it is next to an old cheness tsuka. This one shows the taper from fuchi to kashira here is the nakago ana (sp?) and the cheness... the fuchi and kashira. you can see the slight curve in these pics. It worked out just the way I wanted it. Now for the embarrassing part... the wrap. I had some old vinyl kicking around so I wrapped the core with that. As for the ito, it's something I picked and don't even know what it is ;D It's some kinda sewing edging that cost a buck for fifteen feet. Like I said, this is only for practice. Try not to laugh each strand of this is as wide as two normal ito, but I learned a lot. Here are the ura and omote knots. I've never tied these before. I'm going to do the next core from maple since I already have some lying around. Depending on how it turns out I plan on a full same wrap and new fittings. If i'm pleased I plan to do tsukas for all my katanas.

wow, that tsukamaki and knot work is beautiful. There is no reason why you couldn't install the tsuka as long as it is done properly, although pine is probably not the best option depending on the type of pine.

Nice work and a great start ! Don't feel bad about using sewing borders or trim for the ito, I do the same for my bokens. So long as it's durable and looks good, who cares if it's ito you ordered online or just found laying around at a fabric shop ? Best of luck to you on the maple version !
