A few years back I was gifted a Windlass made spontoon pipe-back tomahawk. It was very heavy for a tomahawk (around 2.5 pounds), and the handle/pipe stem felt very flimsy. That said, I did feel like there was something worth trying to salvage. So, I decided to cut down some of the superfluous weight in the head, and remount it on a longer hickory haft. The decorative elements are Samoan inspired. It's still a work-in-progress. I have a couple more coats of boiled linseed oil to put on the haft, and then a buff with furniture wax. The head needs some scratches buffed out, the edges sharpened, and then some cold bluing to make the recessed etchings stand out. I'm debating whether I should add some leather elements, or leave it with just leather and wood.

These never made sense to me as hawks and now I see why. When you strip the decor off if it, it looks way closer to a war pick now. Cool mods.

I vote bare wood. That looks really awesome, I like the bare bones look to it.

Great mod! I would not add leather. It looks nice but interferes with grip shifts and throwing.
