Since this is tangentially related to sword customization I thought I would ask about re-wrapping the grips on a pair of sai I acquired. I would like to do something traditional with a thin string like this: But have not had much luck in locating string that is strong, thin and black. I think the inside strings that make up paracord would work well but all the paracord I have has white string inside. Anybody have a source for a suitable string? I think nylon would be the most durable but I am open to suggestions. Edit: I found some 1mm black waxed cotton cord on Ebay that looks like it will work. If anybody is interested I will post pics after I wrap the grips.

I feel you melnick. I searched high and low for nylon string in black, to no avail. I could get brickies cord in white, flourescent pink / orange / yellow - not sword savvy. The wax cotton is what they also call artificial leather. And should be fine. That or regular uncoated cotton. I like jute. It's actually quite comfortable and soft, but looks scraggly, old and rustic - if you like that antiquey look.

Thanks for the suggestion. That jute does look authentic with an old Okinawa type look. I did consider hemp but could not find anything thin enough for my tastes. If that waxed cotton cord does not work (I did not know it is similar to leather and I did not want to do leather) I may give it a try.

Thanks kleveland. "Lightly waxed" sounds good and it looks a little more like braided cord than what I have seen before. I'll give it a shot if that Ebay stuff I picked up does not work.

Please share some shots of your sais in progress and when they're done Mel, I have a pair myself that I've been pondering wrapping ever since you started this thread....
