Barring unforeseen wet weather, I will probably be displaying a couple of tables with both modern and antique blades. My display has shrunk, as has participation, so I have loaded out fewer swords. So far, it looks like I will concentrate on the cavalry and eagle pommel swords. I've not loaded out modern medieval or Japanese style stuff, nor the spears. The process has become a bit overwhelming when I do this solo. So, without further pomp or circumstance, an obligatory shot from last year. This will be the fifteenth year there for me. I will not be there if it rains and I may be moving back to the field instead of under the trees. This is a family friendly event with a primary focus on the firearms ranges but there is archery and a hawk tossing station. Cheers GC

Still tentative and pending weather. My back is in really rough shape and I may scale down even further. While apparent in scans two decades ago, my thoracic pain has become greater than my L4-L5 issues. I will update a week before the event.
Cheers GC

Cheers GC Not to bother you with what you probably already know but after going to therapy and doing the exercises there and at home I found the biggest aid to back pain was a back support brace. After wearing out the original I ordered the one below. I am not necessarily recommending that model only enclosed the information so that you know what I am talking about. I don’t wear it all the time, only when I’ll be bent over for a period of time such as working in the garden. It’s the biggest thing I’ve found towards relieving back pain. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00267SFKC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

Thanks, these are something I should have used all the way back through three blue collar careers. A serious issue now is not just a lot of extra weight but this other area is spasm in the T7-T12 area. My lumbar injuries are similar, that stooping even just doing dishes can set that off but this is up between the ribs.

When I was a kid, I would have loved to attend an event like that and participate with my father. To me, these are the kind of events young people need - interactive learning history events to share with those that care. That Saturday event day is my birthday. .....but I don't like birthdays anymore since I am in my late 40s. Haha!.....eh.

Fun for the whole family, even if I don't get down there. Here is Dmitry's daughter having a go back in 2007. I am almost skeptical as to the weather forecasts but so far, the long range shows a dry weekend. We were inside one Sunday but ten feet away from the fiddlers band. Saturday's are usually a fellow that does Johnny Cash and Elvis tunes. The National Guard are there regularly now with a portable climbing wall and large camo Polaris beasts. Lots of kids at the various hands on stations. From rifle to hawk tossing. A slideshow from 2009, post stroke. I am in the first few frames and then friend Todd doing some cutting.

It postpones the pain allowing me to work longer, and happier. On those days when the back is acting up it will lessen the pain. Those days are fewer at the moment.

With the weather looking predictably uncertain, it looks like I will not be displaying this year. No doubt this decision will guarantee the weather will be excellent and I might do the knives and a small handful of swords but with the main cache at a remote distance, I would have to start this weekend. We did do a couple of soggy weekends but doing this solo is just too much if there is even a hint of showers. We did one Sunday indoors but the fiddlers were deafening. I will look forward to this event in another year. Cheers GC

To be honest, the fiddlers are my heritage but at ten feet away, nothing else could be enjoyed. 2003 eight stitches in my left foot 2006 wet weekend, first day car crash (got cut off, ate a curb instead of hitting the pregnant mom) and then Sunday in the hospital. Car totaled. Swords retrieved from a helpful police dept. 2008 (pictured) post hurricane rain and canopy collapse Saturday. Lots of overnight rust. Sunday was ok but damp. A stroke four weeks later. 2009 Sunday inside with the fiddlers, just worn out Other zaniness over the years but I generally enjoyed doing it. 2015 Josh's Dane axe leaned against a tree drops on my sword rack and falls on my knee (blade up, thanks) 2016 same tree, same axe, attacks my katana and takes a chunk out of the saya. A friend gets to try cutting mats and sends a wakazashi sailing over to the hawk tossing station. Had my back turned to that one. The lads have grown tired of doing the event and spend the time with the Hurstwic Viking combat and study groups. www.hurstwic.com/ We did have a cutting whiskey and cigar day some weeks ago. They had been a great deal of help and I've just gotten too old to play superman. Todd with the sword and Josh with the axe. That would be 2012, a great weekend overall. Two river rats and life long friend back to 1970 chatting about decades past. You can see my weight post stroke has been a real issue. That would be from 2015. 2005 shared a table of Kevin Cashen swords What those fiddlers saw One regular back then was driving all the way from northern VT to RI with a handful of neat stuff 2007 was excellent A lot of memories and both good and bad days. If I do get down there on a good day this next weekend, it will be a minimalist effort loading out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An edit on the fence here. I may well be there with just a few swords and the knives but not with the eagles and other cavalry swords. Last minute update would be Friday night.
