Hey everyone, I was scrolling through Kult of Athena's newly stocked items and found a couple swords from a company called Balaur Arms. The specs on them seem to be good, EN45 steel, reasonable weight/balance, and comes with a scabbard and sword belt..all for $199.95. I was wondering if anyone had ever bought from this company before and if so, was the sword of good quality?
Thanks for the responses

looks to be a indian forge contracted to koa, looks similar to some of the dsa herald series offerings in quality and scabbard, so it might be a similar forge or a forge that has the same idea

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

I've been eye-balling those too. They apparently have no website. I looked. Great looking stuff, and the stats are good. When I first saw them, I was tempted to order right then and there, but figured I'd let someone else take one for the team. They sure 'talk up' the tang. Hell, I may go for it anyway. I've got $200 in rolled coins taking up space in my Man-Cave anyway.

Huh, if its an Indian forge I wonder if their quality control is on par with Windlass or is it on the lower end like Deepeeka? I guess I've been in that same boat lol, waiting for someone else to take the risk and make a review. I'll have to really consider this one.

I wish the blades had more distal taper.

I think they use bit thin stock, c. 4 mm at the base. In overall though I think they look quite nice for the price.

It looks like to keep the weight down, they are using some seriously light furniture (those way-forward P.o.B.) - but that isn't always a bad thing. However, I agree that they're KoA going direct with a 'copycat' DSA forge. Even look at those scabbards. That's not coincidence.

With all the imported blades from China and India being sold outside the normal importers like DSA, Windlass, Ronin and such, they are all starting to look the same.

There is a certain "sameness" to some of these new models we're seeing at the low end of price spectrum. I suspect the same forges are supplying more than one company. OTOH, the blades seem reasonably well made on a lot of them. The hilts look a little off. I can't quite put my finger on it... but the proportions seem a little weird at times.... like the guard is 3% too big, if you know what I mean. But at that price point, if it can hold an edge and cut, it might be a great first sword for someone, and I've seen worse looking swords for a lot more money. OTOH, their 14th century longsword has the POB more than 7" out.... that's pretty blade heavy....

Yea the DSA scabbard is a dead give away to a India forge. I remember seeing some other "DSA" swords being sold in Europe that were shown in a older thread. Or perhaps DSA was kind enough to help a little guy and is making scabbards for them!.... Overall they look like decent swords and my birthday is coming up so I may have to bite at one of these if they don't go out of stock by then. Worse case scenario is they are DSA type swords and the hilting is hit or miss. Either way nice looking sub $300 XIIa longswords.

I almost bought one, but the DSA scabbard has me balking. I refuse to buy another DSA sword, period. A #10 bolt threaded "tang" that has been hit with a grinder a few seconds is not a hot-peen, nor a true tang. DSA swords that I own either bend or break at the tang. If someone buys one of these let me know. I'll take a chance on it if its not a DSA-type blade.

Nice! I'm curious too. Did you order it with or without a sharpening service?

Gosh the stats between the two linked are barely different and the POB is still way out there for both. Probably them trying to make the same sword and ended up with varying specs lol.

Sword should be here by Wednesday, I'll play around with it and give my thoughts on it.
