Does anyone here have lengthy experience with the artificial leather ito from sinosword? It looks pretty decent on people's swords, but I've heard bad things about cheap Chinese quality leather ito and I wasn't sure if sino/jkoo was excluded from that. I'm just worried about how it will wear and if it will degrade fast.

I appreciate the advice, but professional tsukamaki almost costs as much as the sword and I can't afford that. Ive had it done before and it cost me about 300usd labor and supplies. Im not saying I'd never get it rewrapped but I want it to last a while before that happens.
And I don't have a strong interest to learn myself and would take years to learn and lots of money spending on decent supplies to practice and get better.

One thing people sometimes overlook is just simply wrapping the tsuka in a leather like European swords. A purist may hate this idea but I have done it a few times and the results were good. On the kashira, run a strip of leather in the holes and glue it down on the tsuka. After that, you can wrap it using leather strips or a solid piece of leather (seam on the bottom). You can attach the menuki with glue and/or a couple of slits in the leather. You can even add risers under the leather.
Just an idea instead of trying to wrap one which I did once and said I would never try to do it again.......
I did at one time have a couple Sinosword and one had the black leather. It was pretty cheapish and hard.

Wrapping completely in leather sounds like a great idea actually, I just may do that

They have a suede-like “leather” that’s on my O-Katana, and it’s soft yet durable for Iaido or display. It hasn’t dried out or cracked at all, and I’ve handled it plenty. Not sure if that helps, but it’s another option if you didn’t want to take your chances with a stiffer leather.

It was offered to me in place of the black leather they normally use, but I kinda prefer it now over the kind of leather Hanwei and other swordmakers use. You can definitely request it, just ask Van.

At first I thought I was going to hate it, but yeah I like it more now. I used to think it would get too slick for a solid grip if it was wet, but it doesn’t. Also the hard leather cracks over time, and if you care a lot about aesthetics then you need your ito rewrapped. Not the case with the suede though!

Might be a dumb question, what is "suede"?

Might be a dumb question, what is "suede"? suede is untreated hide. It has not been fully scraped so it has a “fuzzy” surface and is often much softer and pliable than leather. Both are made from hide however.
