Anyone interested in ballistics will find this article I read on the .450 SMC interesting. It’s a round that reaches speeds of 1,300 fps, which for a 165gr .45 caliber projectile is almost unheard of, outside of jacked up hand loads! Anywho, here’s the article enjoy: www.ammoland.com/2014/11/450-smc-ammo/#axzz5JRkrGRj9

Interesting. I recently acquired some Double Tap +P for my 1911's that are rated at 1100 FPS for a 185 gr JHP, IIRC. Will have to check the box....
I may have to keep my eyes open for some of these rounds or just order some and give them a go.
Thanks!

Yeah I’ve almost bought those same Double Tap rounds before. Always heard good things about them! The cool thing is that these .450 SMC can be shot out of any barrel or gun that can fire +P stuff.

Very cool! Thanks for posting the article. I've always been a fan of "magnum" type .45s. I still have a .45 Win Mag LAR Grizzly. Very similar velocities as this .450 SMC. Another 100 fps with a 6" barrel would be getting close to .41 Magnum velocities (minus the magnum's energy and recoil).
Also, very similar to the 10mm.
I've got to get some to try out.

Wow that’s scary that you bring up .45 Win Mag , cause I literally just found some made by Underwood Ammo (https://www.underwoodammo.com/products/45-winchester-magnum-230-grain-full-metal-jacket?variant=7865921732665)!! It’s a little pricey, but their advertised ballistics is something like 1,600 fps 😳 Which to a fan of both .45 & 10mm like I am is awesome. Underwood also has a 165gr 10mm round with the same 1,600 fps. What’s ironic is that of the .45 Win Mag, the .450 SMC, and the 10mm......none of the 3 are even designated as +P and they are seriously hauling $emprini for handgun rounds! If I’m not mistaken 12ga 2 3/4” slugs plug along at 1,600fps as well?? If you’re going to pick up some of the .45 SMC Curtis, I found this site that was $5/box cheaper than three other sites (including Doubletap’s website): www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/74826

Thanks for the link! I think the +P and +P+ designations are only for standard rounds that are loaded to a higher internal pressure than is standard for that round. It looks like the SMC (Small Magnum) uses a different primer (small magnum) than .45 ACP +P or +P+. Similar to .45 Super, but without the extended case dimensions. I'm surprised that I have never heard of this round before. I found some forum banter about it dated to 2014, so it has been around for a while (it seems). forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=472998

Don’t feel bad, I was saying the same thing to myself (How did I never know about this round before?) while reading the article on it! I said the same thing 10yrs ago when I first saw the .45 GAP, but I never got into that round. The .45 SMC uses a primer usually found in rifle cartridges, which is a pretty ingenious way to “supe” up a great round like the .45, but I get what you’re saying about +P rounds. The only real caveat is that if you were going to use .45 SMC on a regular basis you'd probably have to change recoil springs to help alleviate the jump in power. Still, it’s a pretty awesome cartridge, and dispels that idiocy youngin’s spout nowadays about the .45 ACP being slow and “useless!”

I was way off. I don't have Double Tap. I have Barnes TAC-XPD 185 gr moving at 1000 fps. Only 100 fps "hotter" than a standard .45. I will order some of the SMC and see what it is all about.

Pretty funny... "slow and useless". Kids these days 😏 Yeah.... I had a guy tell me that the new technology 9mm's hit just as hard as .44 mags. I about peed myself laughing at that one. I always say, lie to yourself if you want, but don't lie to me.

Here's how it usually goes...
Some guy who just read 10 articles decides he's a subject matter expert on firearms. Then wants to debate the merits of his caliber of choice (AKA the caliber of the month) and how pathetic you are for yours. You finally get a chance to see if motor-mouth can shoot. Just as you suspected, he can't. However, his excuses for poor shooting range from "its the guns fault, or these reloads I bought shoot terrible, or the ambient air temperature is causing the pistol to shoot erratically and won't group". Whatever, good thing his magic caliber is the ultimate man-stopper.
I learned a long time ago to ignore the B.S. from people unless they can "walk the walk". Caliber means squat if you can't shoot for sh*t.

Years ago I used to be on a lot of Forums, but over the last 3-4yrs I don’t even bother. That includes commenting to videos on YouTube as well, because you’re right, these self proclaimed “know-it-all’s” permeate the interwebs nowadays. The worst part is, they’re not even RIGHT! If someone’s being an arrogant tool, but he knows his stuff.....that I can deal with. These idiots now will argue just for the sake of arguing, and even if they’re wrong which makes it even more annoying. I totally hear you though!

You could be the guy who created the caliber and these wannabe “experts” will try to tell you you’re wrong 🤯 That’s another thing that you mentioned, these self proclaimed ballistics experts probably have zero real world firearms experience, and video games like Call of Duty, and Gears of War do not count as anything! Put a real gun in their hand and they’d shoot their foot off. LOL Again you’re right, it’s not the caliber of a handgun that makes a shooter an “expert,” it’s the caliber of the PERSON holding the handgun!

the 9x25 dillon, in a 9.5" OAL gun offers 125 grs at 1750 fps, (6" barrel) or a bit more.which is over 800 ft lbs. A 4" barreled .44 mag is also 9.5" long, and a lot of the 240 gr loads dont get 800 ft lbs. Furthermore, the heavy swc bullet loads waste at least 1/3rd of that power on overpenetration of a man.
