What's the sword you want to hold in your hand when the final curtain will fall?
Viking funeral? Trapped in a small lane, starting the final attack against a hoard of monsters? Preparing to join the Force? What sword should be in your hand when the valkyries take you away? Hattin?
Anyway, embrace the feeling of the glorious end that's coming. What should be the sword in your hand!

Can I have two?
If not, it has to be my complex hilt Katana, as it was both a gift and a project. Second in line is my Sword of Danu

My semi-custom Hanwei Cawood Viking. I say I will be buried with that thing, but more likely it will fall into the hands of my great niece.

It depends, one I actually own, or any sword at all in all of history? If the latter, then a light saber, without question. Yeah, I know they aren't real, but mega man points for going down with one in your hand.
If it's one I actually own, then I think it would be my Depeeka gladius. I wouldn't pick a katana based sword since that is what would be expected and therefore boring, but the gladius- well, that would be told in stories for a long time to come. And it's a nod to my Italian roots- I have no doubt some of my great ancestors lived and died on the end of one of those things and how could I join them in the hereafter without having the guts to do the same?

I hear ya, Red. My second choice would be a Celtic leaf-blade sword. Some of your kinfolk may have fought against mine in ancient days. We won.

My custom sword of Bronn the sellsword, facing down a mindless horde of medieval "redshirts".

Hmm, that must be why you are claiming victory by using Latin letters... Either way, no hard feelings for killing each other's ancestors off way back when. It was their war, not ours.

A Katana wouldn't be my first choice either, but the one I got is sentimental. I think it is pretty outdated to say a Katana is expected though. Everyone is likely aware how big an impact HEMA made on the sword community. A longsword is by far a much more expected sword by todays standards

Of the ones I own?
The Jody Samson leaf blade
Of the ones I will own when they finally get shipped?
Either the Albion principe or the semi-custom diphos from ZT.

I have swords more beautiful, more powerful, more expensive, but I found myself so often with my Hanwei Tactical Katana in the hand. Lightweight agile saber/messer/katana/sword that feels like a natural extension of my arm. So this would be mine.

A longsword is by far a much more expected sword by todays standards Perhaps in the sword community I can see a European sword being more popular, but I was thinking about how I would look the next day when the newspapers reported about my last stand. The general public is still in "ninja" mode, so any mention of a sword they instantly think of a katana. To go down swinging with a gladius tied and taped to my hand would certainly cause a raised eyebrow and perhaps a mention in the national news as well. And I could go without shame to join my ancestors.

Katana, longsword, or European arming sword. Or shamshir. Or jian, or dao. Or....
Eh, whatever. If I do go down with a sword in hand, it doesn't matter to me what kind it is (just no cheap wall hanger!). Whatever the blade, at least I get to die in style.

And I could go without shame to join my ancestors. True enough. I guess I am still on guard from how much hate the Katana gets. It is a fine sword, even better when you add a guard and use a modern construction method. As far as ancestors go, I still need a viking sword, as thats where most of my blood comes from. I like to think my Sword of Danu kinda hits my Irish roots though, in a way customized to my specifications.
