(Whoops haven't been on here in awhile.) I came across this silk painting at my local antique mall about a month ago, and ever since then I kept going to look at it when I went for my weekly hunts. It was priced at $20 in a booth of other neat 1930's-40's memorabilia that was also super inexpensive and well-documented. Finally broke down and bought it today. It's really beautiful, so expressive and well-done. I have no idea who painted it, or who the soldier is, since it has no signatures or markings that I can see. I didn't want to mess with it too much for fear of damaging the silk. Looks like someone's recently put some tape in there to keep it from sliding around and getting messed up. I've done some a bit of research already but I can't seem to find anything like it aside from one silk painting that was done in occupied Japan. Most WW2 silk paintings seem to be Japanese in origin, and it doesn't look like it's a common art medium in the US even now. I guess it's possible this was done by a local artist, since a lot of the booth's WW2-era stuff originally belonged to people from OK. It's also possible this wasn't actually done during WW2 but perhaps done later as a remembrance? Or something. I'm not sure. Everything else in the booth was pretty well-documented but this painting is mysterious. I'm really curious now, though. I think I'm going to visit some art/war museums and see if I can find out anything about it.

That is really interesting. Somewhat unfortunate that there's no real way to know who this is/was it who painted this, but at the same time it's kinda nice to have that kind of anonymity.

Visiting art/war museums is a great idea to dig deeper into its origins and history. They might have some insight into this artistic enigma.

That WW2 soldier silk painting you found sounds like a real treasure! The fact that it's so expressive and well done makes it even more special. Intriguingly, there are no signatures or markings – a true mystery! It's interesting how most WW2 silk paintings are Japanese, but this one might have a local connection given the booth's other WW2-era items. Who knows, it could be a post-WW2 remembrance piece too! The curiosity is real! If you ever want to give this remarkable piece a fitting frame, check out Banned for Spamming They have some great options to showcase your newfound treasure.
