I think you guys are all correct. It COULD have certain advantages, in my mind mostly CQ, but I believe the Klingons have other more single handed weapons. They have several ceremonial long knives, and some high ranking Klingons had fighting daggers. I was wondering what, if any, current martial arts might use such a weapon (i.e kali, kenpo...etc). Hell no. No as in “no you don’t know of any martial arts that would utilize it” or “no you don’t think any martial artists would use it?”

It's a fantasy weapon and I have never seen a similar real weapon, but who knows all the strange Asian or African bladed weapons. The combat system that I see as a possibility for a batleth is longsword for armed combat/harnischfechten. (... and you could attach more pommels!) I had a similar opinion, but hey, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with MORE pommels! That picture of the Queen of England is awesome!!! 🤣

I think quarterstaff makes the most sense since you're gonna be placing two hands near the center of the weapons. Regardless, I still think its a poor weapon when you consider alternatives. Anything from a spear to a scimitar would be faster, have better reach, and generate more power. Another reason this weapon bugs me is you cant just carry it around. Its big and has a complex profile which means you cant just hang it at your waist like a sword. Instead, it winds up being like a poleax, a primary weapon you have to carry with two hands at all times. Usually, in order to be a primary weapon requiring two hands (and not a back up blade on the hip) a weapon has to be pretty dang good. Yeah, when I was watching hand placement and attack postures, it reminded me a lot of watching guys in my martial arts class spar with bo staves, so its ironic you saw that too! Definitely! For “reach” and multiple attackers it’s probably terrible weapon, and any number of longer area weapons would be better suited to large scale army-to-army battles. Even the Roman soldiers fought with gladius and scutum! I think a bat’leth would look ridiculous hanging off an improvised hook over your shoulder (or everyone’s favorite across the back carry), so yeah mode of carry would be irritating and inconvenient!!

I've been struck by a thought just now - wouldn't having all the mass I'm that way of gripping be really awkward? I feel like it would just be kind of hard to actually swing or put any strength behind a block parry.

The blocks and parrying not so much, but to put any real strength behind a strike I think you’d definitely have to shift (or even readjust) your grip. Again, DEFINITELY not my first choice for a weapon, but I was just curious to see if you guys thought it could be useful at all....and if so, then how?

You will see the one I put together and never finished at the mid point of highschool soonish I never finished it because it was a horrid design for a weapon. Turns in the hand like a dowsing fork over a river of diamonds and gold. Follows half the principles of a pole/staff half the time and can't be trusted to move in a predictable way given its curved grip area and protruding edges and points...the weight is horribly distributed and the ... Ok just...no...like bringing a boulder to a 6shooter at noon duel... Keith

There is no martial art I can think of that will work with.

There is no martial art I can think of that will work with on. It's the primary weapon of Sinanju, and you haven't heard of it because you are not Korean. It pains me to even type out this ridiculous barbaric language, but I am compelled to elucidate you unenlightened troglodytes. Phaw!

Wow, did you scour the depths of ye old fighting manuals to find this?! LOL These shields are reasonably well-known. Prominent in German judicial duels, and usually used with either a sword or club (see club in photo being held along the shield grip), depending on which law code applied locally. Two videos showing such shields in action. These start with club and sword, but these are dropped and the "duellists" then go full bat'leth with them.
