Thank you so much. I've only had time to watch part of the "Basic Blow" it appears very informative and I've bookmarked the site for further studying when time permits. Thanks again.

I hope he comes out with more. I don't agree with all of his interpretations (we time our cuts a bit differently), but we really need more messer videos out there. Having done a bunch of stuff in HEMA, I've found messer to be the easiest to get my head around and I've noticed our newbies are much quicker to understand it than they are with longsword. And way faster than sword and buckler. Given the excellent source material we have, it would make some sense to use messer as the default beginner class. Certainly over Liechtenauer ls which is honestly pretty complex and cryptic.

I dig this. Super informative. Much different from what I learned in other arts

The cleric Johannes Lecküchner's text is a great resource as well. It's remarkably clear for a period fight book. wiktenauer.com/wiki/Johannes_Leck%C3%BCchner#TreatiseThe Glasgow fightbook is also good, but short. Most of these techniques can be applied to a machete.

That is going to take some digesting, but then time is what I have the most of. Thanks Cosmoline.

If you can get a copy this video is good, too www.freelanceacademypress.com/ochsmesserdvd.aspxObviously there's room for interpretation and this one is over a decade old now, but thanks to the clarity of the primary source you don't see anything like the divergence of interpretation you do in I.33 work or some aspects of longsword.

What this thread is really doing is wetting my appetite for a messer. I failed to find one that interested me, thank goodness as I need to recover from the Agincourt that I just received. I would like a messer with about a 24” blade. CS and DSA came the closet. CS offering is not a true messer so I discounted it on that basis. The DSA offerings by KoA are screwed up. But their price is too high for me as I estimate my cost at $600-$700. Like CS their blades are <22” in the specs but a “hefty 30” in the literature. It is also unclear as to the metal used as the specs state 5160 and 1060 but in the literature both are of 1060. That makes the decision easy. Good because I should not be buying at this time.

I had a messer custom ordered over a year ago from an up-and-coming smith. One day it will come... one day.
In the mean time, rest assured you CAN use regular arming sparring swords for practice. Sometimes you have to bend your wrist a bit more like in the inverted parry but it works well enough for drills.
