Windlass swords are made in India. Indian law, to my knowledge, restricts the manufacture of sharpened swords. I ordered an Agincourt Sword recently, it’s still out there in never land. Got to thinking this morning while standing under a hot shower, the Battlecry Line of swords that Windlass sells is sharpened. What is Windlass doing differently with this line to be able to sell sharpened?

If you ordered it from MRL, directly, maybe they put the edge on? I know that MRL's sharpening service is most excellent. I have a Windlass German Bastard sword that will SHAVE.

It is an interesting question. The same can be asked about their Cobra steel line.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the blades are made by Windlass but the finally assembly and sharpening is completed elsewhere. I don't think it's the US due to labor costs.
I've noted distinct similarities between some Wulflund hilt furniture and grip styles between Wulflund's products and the Battlecry line.
It would help explain the "higher" cost without the introductory price, despite the fact these swords have been at their introductory price for well over a year now.

I was guessing this too - that the specialized finish on these blades is done elsewhere, as is the assembly, and then the sharpening is done wherever that is. The furniture is different than most other Windlass blades.

Except for the "Crusader" arming sword and the basket hilt are the two that kind of hurt the theory because they are or have been existing Windlass models.

Hmmm...Now I really can't get my head around it. Seems unlikely that Windlass would go through so much hassle. They're bound to outsource somewhere though. I may have to email MRL and find out about this.

I think the swords are sharpened and shipped from Atlanta. Their showroom is far smaller than the building, so they may have a full assembly shop back there. Which would make sense if they ship from India dull, and get sharpened and shipped from the states.

If you ordered it from MRL, directly, maybe they put the edge on? I know that MRL's sharpening service is most excellent. I have a Windlass German Bastard sword that will SHAVE. I ordered from KoA as it was $20 cheaper. I have the Windlass German Bastard Sword also and stropped it again Sunday. The secondary bevel that KoA put on it, and it was a sharp edge, is long gone. You made me curious so I just checked; it also shaves giving me less hair. Many people complain about the weight, which I consider an asset. Mine came heavy even by Windlass’ standards at 4.2 lbs. I do my PT with the scabbard in place making it 4.7 lb. It will reliably sever a pig’s leg. I’ve done it up to include two plies of rugs. I have a 26” machete that I’ve done it with without the rugs. That sword is not nimble but once set in motion there is no stopping it. It's one of my favourites. Thanks for emailing. Am looking forward to the answer. I suspect they are sharpened by MRL or Atlanta Cutlery. They must be outsourced to somewhere.

No reply from them yet. I'm not holding my breath though. Seems like larger makers are getting more shallow on answering questions from the people who keep them in business.
