Aloha, everyone. I know that flanged maces were a thing, but I was wondering if something like a flanged spear/lance ever existed historically. It doesn't seem cuts with such a design would follow through, but that issue is moot since it's a thrust-oriented weapon. It also seems it could be quite sturdy with it's cross section. It kind of reminds me of the CS lance head in a way. As a side note, Jeanne/Ruler mostly uses it to bash and smash her enemies rather than stab. I guess it can be thought of as a pole mace with a thrusting tip?

Huh, when I saw the title of this thread, thats the exact video that came to mind. I don't watch anime like I used to, but this video sparked my interest in this particular show.
All I know is I want that lance

Fate Apocrypha as an anime is pretty decent. Other cool weapons that are shown are Mordred's Clarent and Siegfried's Balmung swords. I recommend starting with Fate Zero if you just want to get into the anime instead of the visual novels and what not. Be wary of genderbends and different takes on history/myths.
As for the lance, a stab wound from that thing would be quite devastating. The flanged cross section would just keep opening the wound as it goes deeper. Against armored foes, a good old smack should keep ring their bell for a follow up. I would like to see a modern take on Gae Bolg, though.

I really don't think that spear head would be very effective.
As a striking weapon a wood shaft would be too flexible for a decent percussive strike. If metal the question of weight distribution comes to mind.
Distribution of the head weight as well. It's much more spread out than you would want in a bludgeon, and way too large for conventional thrusting. The way it break the line of the flanges edge and then picks it up again could prove disastrous if the spear penetrated far enough, could make it easier to get stuck.
As for cutting forget it. You've basically created a 4 bladed pipeback and given that a single bladed pipeback wasn't good at cutting for blades won't be any better.
If you want a lance with a cool white pennant look up the German M1895 cavalry lance. Sarco has them for purchase for 250 dollars but shipping will run you the same. Don't buy the separate lanceheads. Untempered and not like the originals.

...I would like to see a modern take on Gae Bolg, though. I know it's ethically dubious, but if I ever got my hands on a narwhal's tusk (or large enough whale bone) I would incorporate it into an interpretation of Gae Bolg.

I feel like we've talked about this before... But yes, that'd make an awesome Gae Bolg.
