Sorry for the delay in replying - I do have some photo's of the grain on my computer at home I just need to remember to log on to here after work today! Haha I'll upload them so that you guys can take a look yourselves. I got a replacement from CS and I sent them the old one so that they could analyze the blade themselves. I have not heard back from them about what they think the likely cause of it was though. I have only tried cutting once with the replacement yet as I am still weary of another break. Edelweiss: I fully agree that botching cuts can cause undue stress on a blade. I have been doing HEMA and cutting for a couple of years and I believe I was keeping good edge alignment/form that day but there is always the possibility that I screwed up! Human error is always a possibility in my book

Unfortunately I don't have as clear of a picture of the grain as I thought I did (not sure where the other photos I took went) but here is a close up of the break.

Huuuu choices choices. I like it more and more as I drill, but breaking is a major concern since I want to cut with the bloody thing...

The steel looks cooked/overheated. Not as large globs in my Godfred but the break should show very fine grain (almost just like a matte gray look) and not tiny marbles grouped together. When my sword broke, it did not break cleanly but was cracked most of the way through, with finishing the tear by hand.

elbritannia - It looks like my break is the only one that we've even seen so it may have just been one lemon out of them batch. I also bought mine right as they released this model so it may have been improved upon after they received my broken sword as well.

If you're worried about it breaking start cutting with it and flex the blade with your hands, then if it breaks just send for a refund or for a new one. At least that's what I did with my repros

Crisock: Well, the first report of faillure is in then with a Helicopter of Death event no less. You should definitly send some good pics of the break back to CS for them to analyse, no matter if this happened some time ago. Steel colour, grain, you know the drill. Darn! That's a nasty and sad sight! While you're at it maybe upload those pictures to the forum too. There are people on here who know about this stuff and are impartial. I never expected problems with the blade. Im just stunned a break like that happened on a water bottle. I'm wondering if it already had a hairline fracture or something. It's not the first time that a CS blade has snapped from cutting a water bottle. Buying a CS sword is a gamble. You don't know if the blade you get as a good heat treat or a bad heat treat.

I ended up returning it. Felt nice in the hand, but I really dont want to be pulling a foot of steel out of my face. Oh well! Time to put that money to better use...by which I mean a more expensive sword lol.
